is NAC safe to take daily? (immortal, anyone in the know)

I take jarrows NAC sustain 600mgs daily and I read somewhere that taking it daily like this could eventually cause it to do the opposite of what it is supposed to.

Anyone know about this?

There is currently a long term study in the works on moderate to high dose of NAC in humans to flesh this out.
Some of the controversy is due to the fact that in mice, NAC affects their respiratory system differently than
humans.

Thanks immortal. So the focus of the controversy was specifically on the lungs and not whether NAC would lead to a decrease in glutathione levels when taken on a daily basis?

In the meantime, do you think it is ok for me to take 1 NAC sustain 600mg daily? (maybe 2?)

It's likely to be safe, because it's been a standard recommendation in Germany for the last 30 years, with
an excellent safety record. Go with 600 mg.

sizz, may I ask why u are on NAC?

I have a condition called "hyperacusis" , an extreme sensitivity to loud noises. An ear doc reccomended I take it to help deal with it (to raise glutathion levels) in case it was due to inflammation of the cochlear nerve. Glutathion is the most potent endogenous antioxidant in the body and also helps with hairloss.

The reason I asked this question was the LAST thing I want to do is signal my body into making LESS glutathione by taking NAC (a precursor to glut) everyday.

Glutatmine and glycine are also components of glutathione. When I especially want to raise glutathione (like when I'm chelating, as I'm getting ready to start another round later this week or next, depending on my schedule), I take all three of these together on an empty stomach. I find glutamine a bit stimulating in the evening, though, so I take the bulk of that earlier in the day and then a little glutamine, glycine, and NAC in the evening. Incidentally, glycine has been shown to promote sleep. Seems to work for me.

I have also issues due to some recent ear traumas.

I usually take 1 to 3 NAC (600mg each) a day when my ears have been (or will be) under heavy noise. I live in a big city so ear aggression is what I live daily and I can't avoid many noisy situations.

I also wonder about the safety of the practice of taking NAC daily or very often.
At first I took NAC just once in a while, now it's almost in my daily routine.

What do you guys think ?
