Curcumin and hair shedding
hi CS and others,
I heard/read somewhere about how taking Curcumin induces heavy hair shedding? Can you shed some light on this? (no pun intended!)
I currently ordered CS regimen curcumin.
http://www.iherb.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Curcumin-95-500-mg-120-Capsules/13089?at=0
I'm hesitant in taking it until i get more information.
Thank you very much everyone!!

It was LEF's Super Bio curcumin that caused some posters to shed.

RobHealthMan - Not really sure why, maybe it was too much of a good thing. One poster posted a link to a forum of cancer patients who also felt that the stronger curcumin did not work as well for them.

Re: Curcumin and hair shedding
CS,
I have been using the Jarrow Curcumin for a while and just started the NOW 200mg (trans-res)/tablet. Is the synergism one that they need to actually be taken at the same time, or is the same day fine? Resveratrol is expensive, and NOW has the most bang for the buck on iherb, but is 200mg of trans-res a day enough? I also see that the Jarrow Curcumin says to take once or twice a day I believe. Would you suggest taking it twice based on the shedding people reported from the LE brand?

No problem, Rob. I hope the resveratrol/curcumin help. LEF products tend to be the most expensive. And their dose dependent philosophy about virtually everything is not always accurate, I am finding.

JHarsh, if I may,
You will want to take curcumin and resveratrol at about the same time, because of the synergistic effect they exhibit. Neither curcumin nor resveratrol are as effective by themselves.
Again, the hair loss study used these amounts, far less than most of us are taking now, and participants still got results:
1. 600 mg. of vitamin C
2. 600 mg. of wheat germ (vitamin E source)
3. 80 mg. of curcumin
4. 40 mg. of resveratrol
5. 50 mg. of capsaicin
If you think about it, we are taking 6 or 7 times the amount of curcumin; 2 or 3 times the amount of resveratrol. Some here might argue that this combination is not dose dependent, that these herbs should be used daily, but in moderation.
By the way, Jarrow used to recommend 1-5 capsules of curcumin a day. Now, just 1 or 2.

The Natural,
Thanks for clarifying. Interesting about Jarrow; I wonder if they are a step ahead of LEF on the Curcumin dosage. I wasn't aware that there was a specific hair study in regard to curcumin/resveratrol....Do you happen to have a link to it?

Sure, here it is: http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?wo=2006087759&IA=IT2006000093&DISPLAY=DESC
Also, IH posted some good stuff about the synergism: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1810449/

Re: Curcumin and hair shedding
Curcumin is an iron chelator.
http://bloodjournal.hematologylibrary.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/2/462
Those who have hair shedding with curcumin could have diffuse hair loss due to anemia. But for most people on this forum, we probably have too high iron, and the iron chelation would be beneficial.
Just my guess as to why it causes shedding (assuming it is diffuse shedding and not male pattern, if it is male pattern then nevermind.).

Good point esepio.
I´m still thinking LEfs curcumin is by far the best... maybe there´s a bit of paranoia with it???

Re: Curcumin and hair shedding
Has anyone had any results with this combo? I've heard alot about the patent but have never seen or heard anyone actually say it was beneficial. I've been taking it for a month and my temples seem to have gotten worse. I'm thinking due to resveratrols anti-E properties, it could do more harm than good to people with temples that are extremely sensitive to androgens.

Re: Curcumin and hair shedding
baller,
I have been taking curcumin and resveratrol for over two years. Curcumin and resveratrol reduce scalp inflammation for the majority of users. It all but stopped my dandruff, and hair loss (primarily in the crown area).
It is very reasonable to expect that this combination should help you maintain. But honestly, I am finding that my experience of some regrowth may not be the norm.
P.S. I would advice against using LEF Super BIO curcumin, as it caused many here to shed.

Re: Curcumin and hair shedding
See that's the thing I only have loss at temples, rest of hair is fine. The Italian patent didn't specify where on the scalp hair growth was observed. I think temple recession is soley a genetic response to androgens and things like oxidative damage come into play in the more advanced stages.

Now I'm confused. I too experienced increased shed that coincided with my starting with curcumin. I stopped taking it and the shed has slowed.
Here is the thing. I have Thalassemia Minor and if my understanding of the disease is correct, it tends to lead to an accumulation of Iron so you would think that the iron chelation should actually be a good thing for me.

Re: Curcumin and hair shedding
CS and others,
When I first began this regimen of curcumin and resveratrol almost two years ago, I used the Jarrow's brand. At that time, the recommended dosage was anywhere between "1-5 capsules per day." Last year, their recommended dosage dropped to "1-2 capsules per day." I just received my order from iHerb today, and now the Jarrow's bottle reads, "recommended dosage: Take 1 capsule per day, with food, or as directed by your qualified health care consultant."
1 per day. Interesting, don't you think. Why all of the changes, I wonder.

The Natural - Yes, quite interesting. From all the studies curcumin seems to work best in just one dose. It maybe due its hormesis effect.

Re: Curcumin and hair shedding
Well, I'll be on it soon too (I actually came to the conclusion it was the main thing I needed recently as well, ditching my lignans and things!).. so, let's see how I get on! Hopefully it should compliment my good diet and stress reduction, and edge up my testosterone, that is the hope! ^_^

any updates from people who are on this combo??

Curcumin shedding
For anyone that is interested. I used this combo for over a year, without a problem. Over the past 2 months, been having a horrific shed. I'm pretty sure that the curcumin may have been part of the reason. I tried to take it every other day with resveratrol combo and it seemed to increase my shedding.
Although I've been under a lot of stress lately, which is also contributing, I feel the curcumin is increasing the shed.
