Decalcify for Kidney Stones? Empty Decalcify for Kidney Stones?

Post  The Liberator Fri Feb 26, 2016 11:22 pm

Hi all,

I have been having my father take potassium-magnesium citrate supplement due to research on the effectiveness on oxalate excretion. I know the decalcify uses orotate, and I am wondering why orotate and not citrate? From my basic understanding, Vit D increases calcium absorption, which needs vit K2 (MK7) to direct the calcium to the right areas. The citrate in magnesium and potassium citrate binds to oxalates, which are then mostly excreted through the intestines instead of the kidneys.

Does the magnesium and potassium orotate used in this supplement bind to oxalates more effectively than mag-pot citrate?

Thanks so much!

The Liberator - Good question. No, the orotate form has a very different effect (mainly for heart function), and as such I recommend supplementing with additional magnesium, such as the forms you mentioned. The orotate form has a unique function, but binding oxylates is not one of them.

I wrote an article about kidney stones some years ago. It's on an archived site and will be eventually rewritten/updated.
