Hoople - If something works really well in natural health, it's probably going to get attacked. I've seen phenomenal results clinically from antioxidant therapies. I do not believe that the primary benefits are derived from a hormesis effect.

I should point out that some antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Green tea for example act as both pro or anti-oxidants depending on the needs of the body.
