OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
Hey guys.
Recent result was 17.5
Back in 2011 it was 5.5 or something. I read briefly on the internet about it, I just hope its not related to a pituitary tumor? Although my levels are just above normal which is like 15 in men yes?
Anyways, what other things can cause an increase in prolactin and how do I lower mine?
Thanks so much!

Usually the thyroid, but there can be other causes. Prolactin can be normalized by addressing the cause of
the thyroid disturbance. Excess porn is another cause of excess prolactin too.

Re: OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
Had my thyroid levels checked with the same test:
TSH: 0.607 Range: 0.450-4.5
T4: 8.6 Range: 4.5-12
T3 uptake: 36 Range: 24-39
Free thyroxine index: 3.1 Range: 1.2-4.9
Everything is in range.
As far as porn, I prolly get my fix 1-2 times a week. We're all men here, is that too much?

Above 7 is bad.. it is increasing your pth thus leading to calcification. . Your tsh is low.. do you get enough mag and calcium.. if so search red light and prolactin on google you will see what I mean

You mean prolactin above 7 is high?
And my tsh is definitely low? I thought it was low normal which I thought was good. I thought the higher tsh, the more symptomatic of hypothyroid

Re: OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
Thanks.
Is there a way to know if I'm getting enough calcium without blood testing? I mean I eat pretty well. I supplement with on average 200mg magnesium daily, but immortal didn't think I needed to supp with calcium at that level...
I eat a lot of leafy greens, lots of nuts, mostly vegan, 100% vegetarian , recently cut out almost all sugar , etc
How does one come to conclusion of "I need to supplement with calcium"

Re: OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
Ur prolactin is high so you know you don't get enough bec when your calcium is low your prolactin goes up to signal to bones to start leeching calcium. Well it increases pth amd that signals bones to suck calcium out. Peat recommends 2kmg a day.. regular people 1kmg a day.. what do you get now you should probably check on cronometer.. eggshell is best way to supplement it.. real foods that have it is best ig you can handle it.. check out the red light thing it is a big deal

What do you mean by "kmg"?
Another way for saying 1000 mg?
How much is a cronometer? Oy vay, too much stuff lol
**edit: couldnt it also be possible my prolactin could be high because of porn 2-3x/week? Maybe my body sensitive

Re: OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
Yes ejaculation increases it also.. but the main reason is calcium and mag and not enough. Yes 1000 mg minimum.. but better is closer 2k... its like if you dont get enough protein everyday.. you need at least x amt of nutrients. Also when you are in darkness long time prolactin goes up.. it has some relationship with melatonin.. when you take melatonin your prolactin goes up too.
Ur hair is still falling out right and gets itchy? With that prolactin level I think it would.. mine is also high at 13 down from 13.9 but I havent tested it recently.. thats how I know all this imvdoing everything to lower also.

I work graveyard shift, 11:15pm-7am, my sleep cycles are out of whack... Could that have something to do with it?
**edit: Hm I just read that lack of sleep or sleep disorders can lower dopamine which in turn can raise prolactin..

Thanks sanderson.
So I checked it out briefly (maybe I need to spend more time looking) but it seems the red light therapy is for hypothyroid? I dont believe I have hypothyroid..
I didnt see mention of dealing with prolactin issues specifically?

Re: OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
True.. I was more trying to show you what an impact it makes.. that guy had very bad hair loss as well. Do you ever check your temp or are you on thyroid meds? Temp is the ultimate thyroid check.. it dhould be close to 98.6 I bought a vicks one at walmart thats very effective electronic for like 10 bucks and reading in 5 seconds. I have to find some prolactin specific info for that. .. but its possible you could be hypo even with that blood result..
Tbh u probably are hypo if u still have hair loss

"Tbh u probably are hypo if u still have hair loss"
No, I dont take thyroid meds. My temperature has always been in the normal range. Dude, my tsh is low normal.. And there are a ton of people who have hairloss that have normal thyroid function.
I dont know why you think Im hypothyroid, aside from an elevated prolactin.. Just seems like a bold statement for you to make when most signs point otherwise. My endo also called me back, said "everything in range, nothing to worry about" I know that doesnt mean much, but it's another point signalling that I dont have hypo..
I guess my point is, why tell someone "you're probably hypo" and have them start believing theyre hypo when most signs point otherwise... Its a little unfair to that person to put a possible worry into their head when you have no real grounds to do so..

http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/hypothyroidism.shtml
"Aging, infection, trauma, prolonged cortisol excess, somatostatin, dopamine or L-dopa, adrenaline (sometimes; Mannisto, et al., 1979), amphetamine, caffeine and fever can lower TSH, apart from the effect of feedback by the thyroid hormones, creating a situation in which TSH can appear normal or low, at the same time that there is a real hypothyroidism."
Who has hairloss that has normal thyroid.. I would like to see that. Depends on your definition of normal though.

Re: OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
So youre saying everyone in the world that has hairloss is hypothyroid?
Thats a pretty bold statement man..
Ive gotten my thyroid tested 4-5 times over last 5 years. All come back normal. Thyroglobulin antibodies always normal.
So do I keep scouring the internet, looking for every little thing that could be wrong, stressing over a possible abnormality, which 100% of people will always be able to find, or do I just say, "ok, maybe I have 1 less thing to worry about".
Or maybe everyone's thyroid is abnormal. It seems like thats what it comes to sometimes. That normal, when speaking of averages, actually becomes abnormal, because everybody is f*cked up in some way or another. If we strive to be 100% optimal at all times, doing every little thing we can do at every moment, we lose quality of life.
I guess I just feel burnt out as f*ck sometimes...
**edit: but back to the prolactin, I would definitely like to get that down. Who knows, maybe Im secretely hypothyroid... *sigh*

Really the only way to know for sure is take your temp throughout thr day and see if u stay at 98.6 or not. Go buy one of the electronic ones at wal mart they are cheap and u just put it under your tongue.

Re: OT: What causes high levels of prolactin in men, and how can I lower mine?
A trillion places all over the web plus in regular medical textbooks say 97.8-99.0 is normal for a healthy adult. Here is an example of one: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/healthlibrary/conditions/cardiovascular_diseases/vital_signs_body_temperature_pulse_rate_respiration_rate_blood_pressure_85,P00866/
"The normal body temperature of a person varies depending on gender, recent activity, food and fluid consumption, time of day, and, in women, the stage of the menstrual cycle. Normal body temperature can range from 97.8 degrees F (or Fahrenheit, equivalent to 36.5 degrees C, or Celsius) to 99 degrees F (37.2 degrees C) for a healthy adult. A person's body temperature can be taken in any of the following ways:"
Another place says this about the basal body temp. test for hypothyroid: http://www.wellnessresources.com/weight_tips/articles/body_temperature_and_thyroid_problems/
"The Basal Temperature Test
In many cases of poor thyroid function a cold feeling is not quite so obvious. Dr. Broda Barnes pioneered the use of the basal temperature test to help identify sluggish thyroid function. To do this, place a thermometer (not digital) under your arm for 10 minutes before getting out of bed. This should be done 10 days in a row, averaging the daily reading. Menstruating women should start the 10 day test when their menstrual cycle begins, as basal temperature naturally rises 2 degrees at ovulation. If your waking temperature averages from 97.8 to 98.2 degrees it is normal. Less than 97.8 reflects sluggish thyroid function. "
So they all have their facts wrong? Someones body cant be uniquely optimal at 97.8? That means they are 100% hypothyroid even if they have normal energy, normal blood tests, etc etc?

Ya waking temperature. 98.6 is what it is going to be most of the day. Waking will be what you highlighted.

Im not trying to stress you out dude im just saying buy a thermometer and check lol. Like cs said.. thyroid lowers prolactin.. as does the other suggestions.. so if u make sure they are all good.. thats how u take care of high prolactin.. my temp right now is 98.8 and my hair is falling out still pretty bad.. im not the end all be all.. but my thyroid has been pretty bad years which led to other problems.. prolactin increasinf being one of them...

But say my temp averages 97.9-98.2 throughout day, according all medical literature this is considered normal for a healthy adult.
So what im saying is, if im not at 98.6 at all times, should I be stressing myself out thinking I have a thyroid problem?

I appreciate your feedback sanderson, I do. Im not one to conventionally accept everything alopathic, thats why Im here. But I just have a lot going on in my life, so the last thing I want to do is stress over something I dont have to.. I guess it's hard to know when to believe the medical majority or when to queston it.
