CS: Need cholesterol advice
Hello,
I have a question, I just got my blood results, which were reviewed by a doc, she said that my cholesterol levels are OK but I need to watch them..
She said I dont require in any meds or whatever, just eat better, go to the gym etc...
Is there something I can take to prevent any future damage? my dad is taking cholesterol pills, and his mom as well.
I guess its a predisposition.
Thanks, and looking forward for your advice

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
lostwind - Cholesterol is more of an indication of how your thyroid, potential heavy metal burden, vitamin D levels or testosterone levels are, rather than anything else.
In the early part of the 20th century, before the drug cartel began to take full advantage of the flawed lipid hypothesis, high cholesterol was often a sign that thyroid was low.
So a basal temperature check is a good idea. Or high cholesterol is a sign of either heavy metals (too many) or not enough Vitamin D or testosterone levels.
In about 1 out of 10,000 people there is hyperlipidemia--and even then there are better ways to treat it than drugs.
Statin drugs, which inhibit HMG-co-reductase enzyme via the liver cause absolute muscle damage. They also cause many other problems and there is no doubt that they are the leading cause of congestive heart failure right now.
Tell your dad to drop this stuff as if it were poison, because quite honesty it is in the purest sense of the word.
Also, the perfect cholesterol reading is 222 as total cholesterol. If your cholesterol is around or near that wouldn't even worry about it. Due note that your HDL should be at least 40, and preferably much higher than that.
The only thing that is really a big deal with cholesterol is Lp(a), which most of the time they do not even measure. Triglycerides are much important too.
High dose Krill Oil, magnesium and lipoic acid are enough to drastically improve a lipid profile in many cases.

Thank you very much for the reply, I got my results, wanted to see what do you think... I think they might be right that I need to watch it..
Also the measurements, might not be the same as in the states.. I am in Canada..
The measurements are in mmol/L
Glucose: 4.6 (normal 3.3 - 6)
Cholesterol total: 6.31 (normal 3.15 - 5.18)
Triglycerides: 1.48 (normal 0.4 - 2.3)
HDL: 1.70 (normal 1.17 - 2.5)
LDL: 3.93 (normal 1 - 2.59)
Total cholesterol/HDL: 3.7 (normal 0-5)
LDL/HDL ratio: 2.3 (normal 0-3.3)
Measurement is in: mIU/L
TSH: 3.22 (normal 0.27 4.2)
Measurement is in: pmol/L
Free T4: 16.9 (normal 12-22)
Thanks again!

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
Triglycerides are a little high (not super high), but should reduced about 25%.
Glucose is fine.
HDL is really good.
LDL is fine, because the ratio is actually okay.
TSH is on the high side, should be closer to 2.0

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
Okay,
So I just gotta make sure I eat less carbs / more cardio in the gym to lower Triglycerides ? and how do I go about lowering TSH?
Thanks, much appreciated!

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
lostwind - If you're eating certain carbs known for this, lowering may help.
What supplements are you currently taking?
Would suggest iodine and selenium for the thyroid.

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
I was taking the top 6 - the krill oil but got lazy and stopped it around a month / 2 ago.
I was also taking lugols, a drop a day with selenium, but got lazy as well and stopped a month / 2 ago...
I am going to restart them again.. Also, I never used Krill before.. I used hemp instead.. what do you think?
btw, TSH going higher doesn't mean Hyper? (wasn't sure, thought that iodine would actually kick it even higher)
Thx

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
lostwind - TSH when high indicates (generally) that there is low thyroid function. Although with iodine use there can be a temporary rise in TSH, which then normalizes.
Your lipid profile is fine, although krill oil will lower triglycerides.

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
Thank you CS,
I was reading about how dehydration narrows down the arteries and makes the body produce more LDL to patch the damage made to them since when they narrow they might crack or what not.
Normally before blood tests you have to fast for 12 hours, but drinking is allowed etc.. (should drink)
Before I did my tests I was probably not eating / drinking anything due to stomach ache for around 15 hours... do you think that might have affected some of the tests?
I'll order Krill oil, I checked the reviews on iherb and it looks pretty awesome, I was not too sure about fish oil mainly because its hard to know where it comes from and if it has been contaminated etc..

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
lostwind - Your scores are really excellent, with only exception to triglycerides, and even then it's far from severe.
Cholesterol itself, has nothing to do with heart disease. Inflammation must occur, such as homocysteine, or some kind of toxin to create inflammation. Lp(a), which is a very dense and very sticky cholesterol particle is a real factor, but LDL is a non-factor--in fact, it helps remove toxins in the blood.
Pharmaceuticals has taken full advantage of the hysteria over cholesterol and has used it to push down cholesterol level guidelines which lack any science.
Groups formed "ideal" cholesterol levels based on a consensus of opinion instead of hard science.

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
Morning,
Oh yeah, I see what you mean by "groups", on the result papers it says
"Following the recommendations of the American Heart Association", I remember I read on some forums that substitute the "American Heart Association by Another Heart Attack" Lol (if you are to follow their recommendation)

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
I would suggest stop eating cholesterol and animal-fats. And start eating more soluble-fiber.

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
What about taking Beta-sitosterol? Doesn't that lower cholesterol or alter its metabolism in a favorable manner?

Cholesterol and animal fat have nothing to do with heart disease.
The only connection is that the more of these foods you eat, the better your heart heath.
It's no longer 1980 to 1989. No more treating saturated fats as if they are trans-fats.
They didn't even know the difference back then.
Lp(a) is a thousand times more important than cholesterol as far as heart disease is concerned, and what lowers Lp(a)? Saturated fat does.
Cholesterol is completely innocent.
So here's cholesterol 101 for anyone who still isn't sure:
http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm
And if anyone wonders why statin drugs help some factors at the expense of the side-effects, it's because it increases the activity of vitamin D receptors. It has ZERO to do with cholesterol.
We ate lard, cholesterol, butter long before "Another Heart Attack" came along--that's a line I've been using for years. Trans-fats were introduced in the early 20's and that's when problems began.
Regarding beta-sitosterol and/or phytosterols. Wouldn't recommend them--we need cholesterol. We are dead without it. I suffered sides from taking too much Beta-Sitosterol.
The lipid hypothesis should be a totally dead issue in 2010. I wonder how much longer people will believe in this lie.

And what about Fiber?
With special thanks to Directo for this!

Or look into the works of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, who reverses heart-disease on a no-fat/no-cholesterol/high-fiber plant-based diet.

Glad this works for you misterE and I'm sure it works other many others.
However, it just isn't appropriate for everyone.
How do I know this? As stated a few times already--not all patients have improved using this diet. And not all patients have improved using the diet I use for myself.
Imagine someone who comes from a climate in the cold North. During times when we had no fast moving transportation, plants and grains did not grow during all seasons. Fruits and berries do not grow during all seasons.
Oh, and I'm going to bring Dr. Mercola into this because he has specialized in a mostly diet based approach. He found some get better on Caldwell Esselstyn others do not, many on the kind of diet I eat.
With emphasis added, I want to clearly state that both diets work because they avoid refined carbohydrates and refined sugars and refined oils. This I think is really that simple.

Actually, I have not seen any evidence that the diet you recommend (Atkins) helps reverse the "big-three" diseases associated with MPB. Where are the studies that show the Atkins diet reverses heart-disease, prostate-enlargement or diabetes?

Plenty of evidence already posted on similar threads.
One of them had been posted maybe three times and it came out this year, maybe even this month.

Re: CS: Need cholesterol advice
Thx for the info guys, CS, do you know if the tests.. CPK (creatine kinase), albumin/creatinine ratio have any significance?
I know that CPK is done to check muscle damage? but how can they be sure which one it is.. I read on the websites that its for either brain, heart or muscle in general..so this can be elevated after going to the gym and working out hard?
Also, the albumin/creatinine ratio test seems to be used for testing kidneys, heart disease, diabetes.. are these 3 things associated?
My CPK is: 75 U/L (norm 20-200), albumin/creatinine is: 0.2 mg/mmol (norm 0 - 2.5)
I was concerned if CPK seems to be in the 70's cuz of the gym? and if by working out making the heart beat faster it could possible tear heart muscle to elevate CPK?
Also, whats the diff between urine creatinine and blood? (i guess this is for kidneys?)
blood creatinine is: 68 umol/L (norm 61-112)
urine creatinine is: 15 mmol/L (norm 1.77 - 35)
Thx again.
