OT: Butter and Eggs...How much is too much? Empty OT: Butter and Eggs...How much is too much?

Post  Paradox Thu Jun 03, 2010 6:02 pm

How much butter is too much? I use it with every meal these days. I know it's a healthy alternative to margarine and hydrogenated oils, but I'm wondering if I'm eating too much of it. I seem to crave the stuff.

Also recently I have been eating a ton of eggs. I eat an average of 6 eggs a day.

Hey man. I also eat over 6 eggs/day & cook most of my meals w/organic butter & coconut oil. My family is prone to diabetes & other blood sugar problems, so my diet has worked wonders for me. My blood pressure has normalized, after years of being high.

I used to have a serious butter jones, but that feeling went away once I started popping Brewer's Yeast daily.

LA,

Good to hear that you have success with it. I have insulin resistance and I notice that eggs and brown rice help keep my blood sugar steady. If I eat sugar or too much fruit I feel terrible.

That's interesting about the brewer's yeast. I have to stay away from the stuff because I'm gluten intolerant, but I have some gluten free yeast somewhere.

You'd think that living off eggs and butter would be relatively cheap, but the good range free eggs and organic butter are pretty expensive. I guess you get what you pay for.

That should be 'free-range' not 'range-free'. Time to get some sleep apparently.

tooyoung - Eggs are one of nature's perfect foods. There's nothing wrong with eating lots of eggs. In the past, diet pundits (cholesterol-phobics) with no understanding of the human diet would utter such nonsense about keeping the egg quantitys down.

Eggs are a superfood.

Paradox,

I hear you on the cost of eating healthy. Whenever I buy my supplements or organic food, I cringe when I see the total. But it's worth it, man, especially when you consider the alternative.

BTW, this brewer's yeast contains no gluten.

What's the best way to prepare eggs? Just frying them doesn't remove any nutrients does it?

tooyoung,

I dunno if frying eggs will sap their nutrients or not but I eat hard-boiled eggs daily. They're so easy to make.

I agree with LA, coconut oil is the way to go. I eat at least 4 eggs a day and probably will for the rest of my life. Check out this powerpoint on cholesterol.

I must say my favorite way to prepare eggs are 'eggs in a basket':

put enough olive oil to coat the bottom of a small pan
take a piece of sourdough bread and cut out a square in the middle
put the bread in the pan and crack an egg into the square
add more oil to keep bottom of pan coated so it doesnt stick
let it cook for a couple minutes, flip it once, and keep it in tact
leave the yolk in tact and break it when you put it in your plate and start eating it.
Good stuff.

xyztrace - I've emailed you the powerpoint. Was it the downloading or the actual powerpoint you were having trouble with?

Other than chicken and rice, what are other, filling, hair friendly meals?

There's a lot of info out there that says you should avoid eggs when healing leaky gut, any truth to that or are they ok if no allergies are present?

Big Mike -

This should help answer your question.

"We recommend that patients suffering from autoimmune diseases to avoid egg white at the beginning as Lysozyme may increase intestinal permeability which is one of the contributing factors in autoimmune diseases"

Good to know LA. I have some Lewis Labs nutritional yeast powder which is also GF. It actually tastes pretty good to me (kind of nutty), and I put it in protein shakes.

FWIW on the eggs from Dr. Mercola...

"I would STRONGLY encourage you to avoid all omega-3 eggs as they are actually LESS healthy for you. Typically the animals are fed poor-quality sources of omega-3 fats that are already oxidized. But even if they were healthy, it turns out that omega-3 eggs do not last anywhere near as long as non-omega-3 eggs.

Surely, if you are looking for omega-3, you need to be certain that it is the correct type, and most of these products do not specify it or they make it very hard to discern."

What are the main meals that you lot eat on a regularly basis?

I was thinking:

2 eggs and an avacado for breakfast
tuna or chicken with brown rice for lunch or tea possibly with broccoli

Throw some home made yoghurt in there somewhere.

What other meals could I have though? Is there any problems eating avacados for beta sitosterol? Is the amount of fat too high?

Here in the U.S. I hit up Chipotle a lot. The food is healthy & the prices are reasonable. Plus, they have burrito bowls. I'll eat steak or chicken everyday, along w/some avocado.

I try to avoid fast food but when I'm on the run, I'll get a plain hamburger, sans fries/soda.

I'm also constantly drinking water.

LA-night, do you filter your water at all or is it plain tap water?

What kind of chicken do you eat? Is just supermarket chicken in a packet good enough?

I usually buy organic chicken from stores like Trader Joe's or WF. I thought it would taste strange but it actually tastes better, IMO. The chicken from Chipotle is naturally raised, so that's why I don't mind going there as much as other restaurants. Plus, I can eat a bowl instead of a fattening burrito.

Because of how much water I drink, I stick to filtered tap or water bottles I can buy in bulk. The moment I started drinking lots of water, I felt better -- hydrated, alert & energetic.

What exactly does this mean anyway, I'm seriously wondering? All the chicken in the grocery store says "naturally raised" but I don't think it really means jack shit. The only way I'd eat it is if it said "organic, free range" which I think they used to use, but quit because it was too expensive and 99% of customers couldn't care less.
