2010-02-01 12:01:18 - Sufficiently high doses of vitamin D have a positive influence on testosterone levels

Veldhoven, 1st February 2010 (SRF) – Supplying the male body with sufficient amounts of vitamin D has positive effects on testosterone levels. This was the result of a study conducted by the Medical University of Graz. According to the research, men with vitamin D levels of at least 30 nanograms per millilitre of blood show significantly higher testosterone levels than men with lower vitamin D levels. Furthermore, the study showed that the average value of the most important male sexual hormone over the course of the year is subject to the same fluctuations as the vitamin D level.

Both values decrease as of October, at the beginning of the winter months, and reach their lowest level in March. “Men who ensure that their body is at least sufficiently supplied with vitamin D are doing good for their testosterone levels and their libido among other things“, explains Ad Brand, spokesman of the Sunlight Research Forum (SRF). According to Brand, the fall in vitamin D levels during the winter months is said to be caused by the weaker solar radiation during this period.

Testosterone is the most important male sexual hormone. In males it is mainly responsible for the development of the sex organs, the formation and maintenance of the typical male sexual characteristics, sperm production and the controlling of male desire.

Stimulated by UV radiation, 90% of vitamin D in the body is produced by the skin. An average vitamin D level of 30 nanograms per millilitre of blood (30 ng/ml) represents the scientific value from which vitamin D has a sufficiently positive effect. Optimal values are between 40 and 60 ng/ml.

The Sunlight Research Forum (SRF) is a non-profit organisation with its headquarters in the Netherlands. Its aim is to make the latest medical and scientific findings concerning the effects of moderate UV radiation on humans accessible to the general public.

Note:
A summary of the “Wehr E, Pilz S, Boehm BO, März W, Obermayer-Pietsch B. (Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Nuclear Medicine, Medical University Graz, Graz, Austria): Association of vitamin D status with serum androgen levels in men” study can be downloaded from the SRF website www.sunlightresearchforum.eu

Note to anyone who asks: Testosterone is good for hair, whether one is insulin resistant or not will determine DHT conversion). Testosterone improves glucose metabolism.

Some of us on this forum have already suspected that Vitamin D optimization does this, now we know it's true.

IH - do you think this is the explanation of the difference in hair fallout (and/or thinning) throughout the year ?

I'm not quite sure. All I know is that there are seaonal differences, yet how these are affected and by what mechanism is probably not yet indentified--as least as far I remember.

Most vitamin D supplements come in the form of D3. Avoid vitamin D2, which is ergocalciferol from vegetation. It's not as reliable.

Polluted - It depends on some factors, but generally, for most 5,000 IU or a little more (the darker the skin the more needed). 30 ng/mL isn't quite enough, the body has to reach at least 50 ng/mL before it starts to conserve vitamin D. The ultimate range should be somewhere between 60 ng/mL and as high as 90 ng/mL.

Thanks for the info CS! Good thing I just bought some D3 2 days ago. Taking 4000 IU right now which I hope should be sufficient.

CS - I just received my blood test results and my D3 level was 27 ng/mL. I have olive skin and I live in the NY area. I bought both 5000 iu capsules and 1000 iu capsules with K2. Given your earlier statement I assume I should be taking more than 5000 iu/day but how much? And how soon should I be retested to see if the supplementation is on target?

I know about D2 and D3 in general, I was just wondering if you could explain what D1, D4 and D5 do in detail. The link only has one relevant line which is brief at best:

Vitamin D has several forms: vitamin D1, vitamin D2, vitamin D3, vitamin D4 and vitamin D5. Vitamin D1 consists of lumisterol and ergocalciferol in 1:1 ratio. Vitamin D2 is called ergocalciferol. Vitamin D3 is made of 7-dehydrocholesterol and it is called cholecalciferol. Vitamin D4 is called dihydroergocalciferol. Vitamin D5 is called sitocalciferol.

I'll give it a Google search later.
