MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS AND MODERN DISEASES
Hi,
A family friend sent me the following paper:
https://hrcak.srce.hr/file/216298
(MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
AND MODERN DISEASES
Goran Nikolic1, Dragana Markovic2)
I know it’s a bit old but I’m still curious to get your thoughts on this please, Brian. Your expertise and informed opinion is highly valued. Thanks in advance

I only skimmed the paper, as this subject is nothing "new" per se and have heard virtually "everything" on this subject for decades.
There are no absolutes on these types of pieces. Especially now in social media, there are all kinds of messages with purely black and white statements with little nuance.
So for example, taking in synthetic vitamins versus taking nothing is usually better (not always....i.e, iron.....should be avoided entirely).
There are circumstances in which if a short-term detox is needed, high-dose, synthetic Vitamin C will do what is needed, and the natural form would be pricey and less efficient at achieving this goal. IV-therapies often use between 30 grams and 120 grams of Vitamin C intravenously. This is short-term only.
However, if using natural food form Vitamin C, there will be no consequences of long-term use, however long term use of high-dose Vitamin C could deplete copper for example.
Then on the Vitamin E (Tocopherol and Tocotrienol, A, B, D, and G fractions), the synthetics are not good here as they usually contain only one isomer and the results are not good.
It can be argued that synthetic minerals are not organically bound, rendering them less effective than natural, however they are (except iron) usually better than nothing.
If looking at synthetic Vitamins versus natural, it's not quite as cut and dry as we are all different. Synthetic B's can cause issues in some, yet are effective for others. The IV's of B (synthetic have been used, sometimes to good use).
Bottom line really is there are many other things to be more apprehensive about, such as microplastics, using a microwave, using the wrong choices of fats and oils versus the good ones.
On page 43 of the PDF, there is a good example of the synthetic labels additives, which are not so great. It could used as a litmus test on which supplements in general to avoid, plus inferior forms of Vitamins. They are not all universally bad or even harmful, it just depends on the person.
That said, I have seen improvements from people using synthetics, however the labels were not terrible or had too many poor additives.

Thanks for your response CS, informative as always. Do you have any blogs or websites active at the moment? Your previous websites were golden nuggets of information and resources.

I have some archived links from material that no longer has active hosting. At some point I tried updating some of these articles to another site, however I had lost all access the updated versions as that hosting just disappeared without notice.
