Niacin (flush kind)
Does anyone know if niacin has anti inflammatory properties when ingested?

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
Yes it seems so,
Niacin Inhibits Vascular Inflammation via Downregulating Nuclear Transcription Factor-κB Signaling Pathway

Evidence That Niacin Inhibits Acute Vascular Inflammation

Vitamin B3, fiber 'protects against colon cancer and inflammation'

So I'm wondering if the "niacin flush" with it's vasodilating effects may help with scalp blood flow.
However the flushing effects induce prostaglandin release...
"Several prostaglandins with vasodilatory properties are influenced by niacin. Specifically, levels of PGD2, PGE2, PGI2 and their metabolites have been shown to be increased as quickly as 12–45 min after niacin treatment"
"Individual prostaglandins can have both positive and negative effects (i.e. pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory or vasoconstrictive) depending upon their concentration, relative proportion to other prostaglandins and expression of receptor types. As prostaglandins are rapidly metabolised and have short half-lives, their metabolic effects are typically localised and can be variable in different parts of the body."
"The production of PGI2 and PGD2 decreases after repetitive administration of niacin in parallel with the development of flushing tolerance"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2779993/
So taking in niacinamide form won't give you the flush and it's niacin that is usually used for circulatory problems.
Also I've read to be aware of the product quality.

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
thanks
how about its cholesterol lowering effects?
ive read that niacin/nictonic acid may be superior to cholesterol lowering statins?
lowering cholesterol, what implications does this have for hormone synthesis? like testosterone etc

niacin is good
it mimics minoxidil, and is essential for the thyroid too

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
in the brownstein iodine protocol, he reccomends it for thyroid function
secondly
niacin is similar to minoxidil tablets, which are similar to apply polyphenols and grape seed extract
however, Niacin in my opinion is better and much cheaper than apple polyphenols if you only wanted hair re-growth
apple polyphenols did nothing for me

you mean niacin is reccmended for thyroid function?
or iodine?
imo too much iodine can have a detrimental effect.

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
No, niacin for hair loss is meant to be good.
But if you take iodine, you are meant to take niacin with it anyway, as part of a protocol.
ignore my other post, it was kind of nonsensical

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
what do you think about the safety of taking niacin?
i have read that high doese can damage the liver?
any idea how this is?
or is this scare mongering from the pharmaceuatical giants?

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
I believe non flush niacin version damages the liver
the only safe version is the normal niacin , which may cause a flush, but not always

Neither form damages the liver. However, sustained forms of standard flush niacin can cause some problems in the upper 2 to 3 gram dosages.
More about niacin and minoxidil:
There is one common link between niacin and minoxidil. They both stimulate more ATP, although the way it is done is different.
The problem with minoxidil is that it tends to exhaust resources, so if there isn't enough substrate or material to produce ATP naturally, minoxidil can compromise the system and eventually even induce hair shedding, not to mention age the face, because it breaks down collagen.
niacin inhibits phospholipase A2, which is a precursor for a chain of inflammatory pathway of AA, COX-2 and 5-LOX.
Standard flush niacin, ironically elevated prostaglandin D2 (a pro-hair loss eicosanoid). flush-free niacin (niacinamide does not do this). However, fish oil or krill will prevent the PGD2 effect if standard flush niacin is taken or Quercetin.
In my view, if I had to pick on niacin to take, it would be flush free, not standard niacin, because all of the pro-hair effects and skin effects are there, without the detrimental elevation of PGD2 exist.
There's other effects from niacin as well, generally anti-anxiety and general well being, which published research goes all the way back into the 1930's. So really think niacinamide would be much more preferable than minoxidil on many fronts.

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
Thanks for info CS. My personal observation is that Niancinamide definitely helps with anxiety. It seems PGD2 rise is connected with all flush supplements. I am concerned because I use Beta-Alanine, should this short term rise be a concern?

Would switch from Beta-Alanine to Carnosine, because without the other peptide (L-histidine), there will an itch and excess histamine) to deal with.

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
what do you guys think of niaicns ability to boost dopamine? it doesnt directly do this but may through other pathways.
i have read that niacin (flush kind) promotes NAD/NADH which in turn is a good dopamine booster?
any thoughts?

When you're comparing Niacin to Minox, are you suggesting to apply it topically? Thanks

Re: Niacin (flush kind)
Would long term use of Niancinamide at daily dosage of 500-1000mg pose any problem? I have read that high doses of Niacin can worsen insulin sensitivity. I guess it would be wise to take it with other B vitamins.
