Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
IH, could you please explain again the difference in benefits between taking cod liver oil versus krill oil. Why is there a biological difference between an intake of 5 IU of vitamin D coming from one or the other so long the intake in IU is identical. Also what are the precise benefits of this krill/cod oil derived vitamins. Thank you again

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
Gioc--
I can help a bit here.
Krill Oil is considerably more concentrated per capsule than Cod Liver Oil when it comes to Omega-3s, and also is loaded with phosholipids--something that Cod Liver Oil lacks. Those have a host of health benefits for you.
Regarding IU--it varies on the type of Vitamin D. Carlson's Vitamin D gels (I use the 2000 IU ones, take 2 in the morning, 2 at night) are the proper form.
As far as precise benefits--anti-inflammatory properties, great for your skin, and I'll let IH add the rest.

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
Here's some quotes about krill oil ....
---------------------------------------------------------
Why is Krill Oil Beneficial?
It is beneficial because our bodies need antioxidants in order to protect it from cell damage that is caused by free radicals. Free radicals are substances that are considered unstable and are thought to contribute to the development of some chronic diseases. Astaxanthin is unique because unlike other antioxidants it can cross the barrier of the blood-brain where it is possible to protect the central nervous system, the brain as well as the eyes from damage caused by free radicals.
There are plenty of products found on the market that tout their antioxidant powers. NKO Krill Oil is said to be unbeatable in its potency compared to other products. There has been independent studies conducted on NKO Krill Oil and they show that:
NKO krill oil is greater than the vitamins E & A by 300 times
NKO krill oil is far superior to Omega-3 supplements alone by 48 times
NKO krill oil shows greater benefits than CoQ10 by 34 times
It also has proven in clinical trials to increase the good cholesterol HKL by more than 40% and lower the bad cholesterol LDL by more than 30%

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
Gioc - Great responses, well I'll just add that with fish and cod liver oil, the body has to break down the triglycerides before it can access the EPA/DHA, whereas Krill oil already is in usable form. On top of that, it is bound to phospholipids, so these are escorted effortlessly into the cell membranes. Furthermore, the phospholipids themselves have a benefit, plus the existing astaxanthin prevents oxidation and maximizes the integrity of the oil.
Finally, it is very easy on the stomach--especially if you compare it to taking a lot of cod liver oil.
The only downside is that there is practically no vitamin D in Krill, so supplementation in that area is highly recommended.

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
The reason i don't take Krill Oil is because while I found it to be easier on the stomach (no fishy burps), it was harsher on the intestines--taking it sans adequate food or too much would cause loose stools.
Also, for some reason, I never gained the skin/hair moisturizing benefit that I get from taking grams of omega 3's.
That said, the studies supporting its supperiority are very compelling.

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
At last !!!! another guy that feels like me !
I DO really think that krill make the stools loose too !
more than CLO....
But i also did experience that loose thing on CLO....I think that is this that make my throat very dry (and a little soar) WHEN I BREATHE....
I must say i have quite a warrior diet in the things i eat . rich of other Omega 3 / 6 /9 source like walnuts; sardines, almonds, nuts, olive oil, borage oil....
that's been more than 2 years that i have this feeling....it's time to change the Omega 3 source...or at leat eating less food source..

Right then, out with the flax oil and cod liver oil, and Krill oil will be my next purchase!
Anyone share any UK based sites that offer good quality krill oil?

What are your omega 3 sources besides CLO or krill ?

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
Hey Europe,
Yeah, krill oil definitely can do that. I tried it twice with the same results. Currently, I'm using this fish supplement:
http://www.iherb.com/Natural-Factors-RxOmega-3-Factors-Pharmaceutical-Grade-120-Softgels/2717?at=0
I think it is very good. In fact, I just reordered it. I eat walnuts during the day. Then when i eat larger meals I take the fish oil. In general, this fish oil is pretty mellow for my digestive tract, but effective.

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
And do you really feel a diffference between this stuff (Natural Factors, RxOmega-3) and CLO ?
in terms of what ...
andhow many per day will you take ? because only one softgel contains EPA 400mg / DHA 200 which is quite huge....

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
I haven't really set out to compare/contrast the two, so I haven't any distinctions. That said, I have gone through two bottles of CLO on two different occasions. What I am using now I prefer above and beyond CLO and a couple other omega 3 fish supps I have tried--mainly salmon.

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
It's also worth mentioning that not all fish oils are equal, even if molecularly distilled. I had to give a large bottle of twin lab's molecularly distilled fish oil away, as it was one of the foulest things I ever encountered.

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
Is it true that one should supplement with fish oil only in the a.m. and lunch time and should not take any after 5-6 o'clock in the afternoon ? It had to do sthing with the oxidation process in the body and the bio-rythm ,i don t remember exactly, but i 've surely read it recently. It only regarded fish oil and not krill oil,though...
Anybody has a clue?

Not sure, but i can tell you that it takes me longer to sleep if i have fish oil or krill oil in the evening. Might be because of increased blood flow causing me increased stimulation or something. That's just a guess though.

I have used the Omega RX from Iherb for 2 years or so - have since switched to Costco, it has more EPA/DHA per capsule and is enteric coated so no smell afterwards, I like it...it is molecularly distilled. Costco offers few kinds of Fish oil...

That's the kirkland one right? I'd rather go with a more quality fish oil like from Carlson's. There are way too many additives in the cheap Walmart, Kirkland, etc. brands.
Ingredients:
Fish Oil Concentrate, Gelatin (non-bovine), Glycerin, Water, Vanillin, Tocopherol.
May Also Contain:
Methacrylic Acid Copolymer, Ethylcellulose, Sodium Alginate, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Phthalate, Medium Chain Triglyceride, Triacetin, Oleic Acid, Stearic Acid, Ammonium Hydroxide, Polyethylene Glycol.
Contains: Fish (Anchovy, Sardine) and Soy.
I just got some NKO and Wholemega by New Chapter. Check out wholemega as a new fish oil product. It seems pretty high quality.

Re: Krill oil, cod liver oil, etc
Point taken -
I had 3 criteria in mind when I made the switch:
(1) higher EPA/DHA per capsule / price point
(2) enteric coating
(3) Molecularly distilled
My reason to switch away from OmegaRx was the need for enteric coating - the fishy burps were not helpful. My main source of Omega3 is Krill , but I do mix it with 1 Fish oil capsule /day
