Is Diet Coke bad for hair and health?

Hi there.


I was wondering... I have always drank diet coke in the last 10 years, at about an average of 1/2 - 3/4 liter each day. Right now I'm drinking "Coke Zero", which is a variation of the diet coke (I'm not sure if it exists in the USA), and it has the following composition:
- water. carbon dioxide, E150d, sweeteners E952, E 950 and E951, acidifier E338, aromatizing agents and E331.


Is this kind of coke detrimental to health? May it be implied in hair loss?

I would say that DC is at least the same rubbish as normal coke..
You know the sweeteners might be worst than sugar..

I was looking for a more through explanation about why... only detailed information will be able to induce changes in the habits we are addicted to.

hairze - I'm afraid to tell you that diet coke and coke zero are much worse than regular coke, whether that cokes contains sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

The most important points are: "Regular" diet coke negatively affects the intestinal flora, worsens insulin resistance and increases cardiovascular diseases.

Coke Zero, contains the poison aspartame and causes a myriad of serious problems.

Amazing that this pesticide ever made it into the mass populace.

I read this as I sip my coke zero Sucks. I rarely drink it though.

So just to summarise:

If you were in a bar/restaurant or something and you needed a refreshment (i usually drink water), and there were only sodas available...

What would be the better for your hair???

I always thought Diet coke would have a lesser effect on insulin levels than the sugar laden Regular coke???

coco - Coke or other colas within the United States are sweentened with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which has a neglible effect on blood sugar, however it does highly contribute to metabolic syndrome, liver scarring and other problems, however it bypasses the pancreas.

Coke or other colas made outside the United States are sweetened with sugar, and the effects on hair will be much more negative in the short and long term, whereas cola's sweetened with HFCS will only be harmful in the longer term.

Diet coke, sweetened by sucralose (Splenda) will destroy a significant percentage of intestinal flora (50% in rat studies) and this alone will cause serious problems for blood sugar metabolism.

When an artificial sweetener is consumed, the body does recognize it as sweet, and interestingly does affect insulin levels negatively. There are other negative effects as well, depending on the artificial sweetener used.

I thought that the aspartame thing was an hoax, because the needed blood levels for it to become toxic were much higher than dose present on the sweetened products...


Anyway, I'm kind of dependent on drinking carbonated drinks... are there "healthy" no-sugar sodas?

hairze - THE MOST healthiest soda drink EVER is sugary water kefir or SKG. This drink does have sugar but miniscule amounts after fermentation. You can make ginger beer, lemonade, or whatever you like and it will be 110% healthy for you. If you google it you will find tons of info.

hairze - Aspartame is a poison with no exaggeration. If you want an increased chance of a neurogenerative disease it will be something you want to keep taking. I've seen a lot of damage caused from it. Avoid at all costs.

I will add there is a beverage called Zevia, it is available at Whole Foods and other health food stores.

Well... living in Europe, I don't know if I'll be able to get any of these drinks...

hairze - Water kefir grains are similar to milk kefir grains in the sense that once you purchase one batch you can grow an infinite supply, given you look after them. Water kefir will build your intestinal flora with beneficial bacteria.


Caustic - haven't heard of zevia before, i'll have to try some!

Though for those that are super paranoid about oxalates, you may want to give stevia a miss.

Zevia is good stuff. You can definitely taste the stevia in it, but it is light and refreshing

Erythritiol is pretty safe, the only problem with it, is that is not as sweet as sugar.
