BXO aka Lichen Sclerosus
I have a friend that is dealing with this and was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to deal with this? Doctors and web recommend circumcision. But I think thats overkill. Just like Dr's. cant fix it, get rid of it. What do you guys think? CS, JDP...others

Personally, I would go on low oxalate diet and also read this http://www.curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1712063#i

Re: BXO aka Lichen Sclerosus
BTW, regarding low oxalate diet, there is virtually no information outside of a yahoo low oxalate forum, but here is a quote I grabbed from there.
An expanded list...
I should mention if someone has a problem with oxalates that once one goes on a low oxalate diet they will experience "huge" detox symptoms that come in waves due to the oxalates leaving the tissues. Oxalates are bound with metals. In other words, your friends BXO will get worse before it gets better.
Essentially anyone with gluten issues, leaky gut issues, etc. will have oxalate issues. FWIW, "it would appear" this means most who suffer from hair loss will have oxalate issues.
For long-term correction so not always on low oxalate diet getting potassium levels up is extremely important. Keeping potassium levels up is easier said than done as being hypothyroid, low magnesium levels, food sensitivites as well as others will keep one having low potassium levels.
hope this helps

Notes: "Oxalate dumping" is the theoretical explanation for symptoms; a fecal
test for oxalates has not been
available but may be soon.**
Some parents recognize the same symptoms occuring during illness as
occured after dietary infractions or when "dumping"
Some parents have noticed what may be "oxalate dumping" after HBOT.
Some children have had BIG trouble with return of symptoms on
chelating agents or on LDN.
There seem to be sporadic times of "dumping oxalates" while on the
diet and symptoms can be severe and similar to hyperoxaluria literature.
Oxalates impair carboxylase activity and may produce symptoms seen
in biotin or biotinidase deficiency.
Some women notice what they think are "oxalate" symptoms related to
monthly cycle
We have commonly heard of stool changes…white flecks; black flecks
during what may be "oxalate dumping".
Going completely low seems to be necessary to get the big
improvements.
**sco note:
We hope to confirm that this onset of symptoms is an issue that runs parallel to
the proven release of oxalates from the body that occurs in genetic
hyperoxaluria after the source of oxalates is removed by surgical removal of the
liver and replacement with a liver that does not generate excess oxalates. On
the far side of these times of purported "oxalate dumping" are some welcomed
improvements!
Areas improving in adult listmates
Improvement in hypertension
Alleviation of carpal tunnel problems
Loss of fibromyalgic pain
Cysts healed
Improved cognition
Loss of back pain
Loss of joint stiffness
Loss of heel pain
Weight loss
Improvements in libido
Monthly periods are starting back in women
Improvement in balance (cerebellar--per physician)
Regaining daytime urinary continence
End of severe insomnia

Re: BXO aka Lichen Sclerosus
Does anyone have any news regarding this issue?
I have this problem since an year and a half ago. The dermatologist I've seen said is an unknown disease, possibly autoimmune and she gave me a steroid cream that stings like hell and since I don't like chemicals, I used it once or twice and threw it away. I don't have it that bad for the moment (no itch, pain, nothing) just that the skin has some white patches.
I also have another autoimmune disease (dust allergy), I don't know if it's related.
I've seen on this forum that autoimmune diseases and oral problems go hand in hand. I have two root canals. I will deal with them soon and see if I'll get better.
desmadre : What did your friend do and how is it working for him?
In the mean time I will try to follow jdp's advice.
Thanks in advance!

Re: BXO aka Lichen Sclerosus
Hmm, that low oxalate diet doesn't seem to work. A woman with a lot of knowledge about this issue ("I've gone through hundreds of various treatments with trial and error with the ten years I had this agonizing pain (9+ yrs of being well as of last April '08) and researching through thousands of journals regarding LS and other Vulvar pain issues even longer, and these suggestions are what helped me the most and healed me eventually.") is saying:
"Some have tried the Guaifenesin and Low Oxalate diets. (I did both and they made no difference) The low oxalate one hasn't been proven scientifically according to the literature, but eating certain foods, like greens, chocolate, berries, jello, beans and nuts, may produce oxalates in the urine that are irritating as the urine flows over that damaged tissue."
Her site's address (found in jdp's post) http://lichensclerosus.net/?Suggestions_%26amp%3B_Tips:Diets
