Olive Oil’s Anti-Inflammatory Benefits Linked to Gene Expression
July 2010
Phenolic compounds in olive oil could help repress genes linked to inflammation, thereby providing a molecular basis for the reduction of heart disease risk already linked to the consumption of olive oil, according to a study published in Biomed Central Genomics.
"This study shows that intake of a virgin-olive-oil-based breakfast, which is rich in phenol compounds, is able to repress in vivo expression of several pro-inflammatory genes, thereby switching activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells to a less deleterious inflammatory profile," wrote the researchers.
"These results provide at least a partial molecular basis for reduced risk of cardiovascular disease observed in Mediterranean countries, where virgin olive oil represents a main source of dietary fat."
Previous studies had shown that the consumption of olive oil with a high phenolic content could help reduce pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidant and pro-thrombotic markers compared with the consumption of low phenol virgin olive oil.
The researchers of the current study set out to investigate whether the beneficial effects of olive oil could be linked to gene activity. Their approach was to identify expression changes in genes that could be mediated by olive oil phenol compounds.
The study, which followed a double-blind, randomized, crossover design, involved 20 patients suffering from metabolic syndrome. After an initial six-week wash-out period during which participants did not take supplements, vitamins or drugs, they were fed two virgin-olive-oil-based breakfasts with high (398 ppm) and low (70 ppm) content of phenolic compounds.
All participants consumed a similar low-fat, carbohydrate-rich diet during the study period to eliminate potential impacts resulting from their usual dietary habits.
After tracking the expression of over 15,000 human genes in blood cells during the after-meal period, the researchers identified 79 genes that were under expressed (or turned down) by the high phenol olive oil, and 19 genes that were over expressed (or turned up).
"Many of those genes have been linked to obesity, high blood fat levels, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Importantly, several of the turned-down genes are known promoters of inflammation, so those genes may be involved in ‘cooling off’ inflammation that often accompanies metabolic syndrome," writes the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS), which was involved in the study.
The researchers concluded that their findings strengthen the relationship between inflammation, obesity and diet, and provide evidence at transcription level of control of healthy effects derived from virgin olive oil consumption in humans.
However, they added that "it would be interesting to evaluate whether these beneficial effects are maintained after prolonged feeding and if these effects are carried out by one or several olive oil phenolic compounds, or if they are the consequence of a synergic effect of the total phenolic fraction."

Olive-oil and other vegetable-oil are one of the most unhealthy foods around... also the most fattening at a whopping 120 calories per tablespoon! The fat in olive-oil is already in the form of triglycerides and is effortlessly stored as aromatase-rich body-fat, decreasing insulin sensitivity.

MisterE,
did you even read the study? Seriously, your veganism has all of the trademarks of a religion in that you you have made up your mind and you are no longer influenced by facts.
That is fine, do as your wish - but unfortunately you may lead people on this forum astray! I for one have been on an anti-vegan diet , completewith all sorts of oils( cod, olive , coconut) and my health has improved substantially . I look like a totally different person and it show in my blood tests.

Both are bad for hair when bound to SHBG.

Never seen a population eating nothing but protein and fat become a very successful population, all the ones that do (western countries) have a high rate of bone-loss, cardiovascular-disease, diabetes, and cancers.

Olive oil is a super-food ... but actually, is surpassed by olive leaves in terms of antioxidant activity. Olive leaves is rich in
oleurepein (not sure about the spelling), that is beneficial for the hormone system.

Oh now, it's about success! As there is nothing to say about health, let's find something on success!all the ones that do (western countries) have a high rate of bone-loss, cardiovascular-disease, diabetes, and cancers.

We should be more clear on what is "processing". Your brown rice doesn't appear in your plate ready. Like olive oil it has to be "prepared".misterE wrote:Directo wrote:And rice is not?misterE wrote:cpio wrote:Olive oil is a super-food

A processed food is when something has been added to it or if it has been heated, frozen or smoked, when purchased.
Some foods can be highly processed, average or just slightly .. Not all processed foods are bad, some organic ones can be good. I would say that around 90% of all processed foods are something to avoid.

Would you agree that cooking-oils are one of the things to avoid at all costs?

Avocado, Coconut, Grapeseed and Olive OIl are good, beneficial cooking oils because they reduce inflammation and DHT among other things.

Olive oil is a good cooking oil because it is high in antioxidants .. it can also be stored outside the fridge after opening for months for this reason. When used for cooking purposes it should never begin to smoke or change color, and never sit on the heated pan alone.

Re: Olive Oil’s Anti-Inflammatory Benefits Linked to Gene Expression
Olive oil is very well tolerated by the stomach. In fact, olive oil's protective function has a beneficial effect on ulcers and gastritis. It just tastes good. I guess I would have to say it is an acquired taste and some people just don't like the bitter characteristic of some oils. People have used olive oil for centuries for personal care. It is a great skin moisturizer, in part because it contains linoleic acid, a compound not made by the body, but which prevents water from evaporating.

Do you know if sesame or safflower oil reduce DHT a bit ?
Thank you.
