Flax Seed and Prolactin Empty Flax Seed and Prolactin

I've been taking flax seed for fiber, omega 3, and estrogen balance. However I'm worried that flax may increase prolactin.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11588903

The flaxseed diets significantly reduced serum concentrations of 17 beta-estradiol by 3.26 pg/ml (12.06 pmol/l) and estrone sulfate by 0.09 ng/ml (0.42 nmol/l) and increased prolactin by 1.92 micrograms/l (0.05 IU/ml).

Is this a valid concern and if yes is it logical to assume that 7HMR spruce lignans would have the same affect?

baller234 - If you consume a lot of flaxseed, it's a good idea to be sure you're taking enough magnesium, zinc and b6, due to the 6-delta-6 desaturase enzyme deficiency it can cause if you're short on these nutrients.

Yeah I take ZMA in addition to a b complex and magnesium citrate so I think I'm doing well in the vitamin and minerals department as far as flax seed is concerned. I'm just worried about prolactin elevation. Is there anything that can be done to counteract the elevated prolactin from flax seed (Does this actually even happen?)? I know b6 is suppose to suppress prolactin and this may be why I haven't experienced any side effects associated with prolactin (puffy nipples, longer refractor time) but can high doses of b6 (60 mg ED) be sustained long term?

Thx for your help CS.

baller234 - It's difficult to say what effects on prolactin would occur in men, since that study you mentioned above was performed on postmenopausal women, moreover it was not a long study, so perhaps the effects were transient, and could be a result of a temporary suppression of thyroid hormone, which typically causes short duration prolactin rise, which eventually balances out. Further, iodine may ultimately prevent any goitrogenic effect.

At any rate, B6 is safe in amounts long time of 150 mg/day.

If you need extra protection, then chasteberry would help.
