BACKGROUND:
Some experimental animal studies reported that vanadium had beneficial effects on blood total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG). However, the relationship between vanadium exposure and lipid, lipoprotein profiles in human subjects remains uncertain. This study aimed to compare the serum lipid and lipoprotein profiles of occupational vanadium exposed and non-exposed workers, and to provide human evidence on serum lipid, lipoprotein profiles and atherogenic indexes changes in relation to vanadium exposure.
METHODS:
This cross-sectional study recruited 533 vanadium exposed workers and 241 non-exposed workers from a Steel and Iron Group in Sichuan, China. Demographic characteristics and occupational information were collected through questionnaires. Serum lipid and lipoprotein levels were measured for all participants. The ratios of total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to HDL-C and apoB to apoA-I were used as atherogenic indexes. A general linear model was applied to compare outcomes of the two groups while controlling possible confounders and multivariate logistic regression was performed to evaluate the relationship between low HDL-C level, abnormal atherogenic index and vanadium exposure.
RESULTS:
Higher levels of HDL-C and apoA-I could be observed in the vanadium exposed group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, atherogenic indexes (TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and apoB/apoA-I ratios) were found statistically lower in the vanadium exposed workers (P < 0.05). Changes in HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, and LDL-C/HDL-C were more pronounced in male workers than that in female workers. In male workers, after adjusting for potential confounding variables as age, habits of smoking and drinking, occupational vanadium exposure was still associated with lower HDL-C (OR 0.41; 95% CI, 0.27-0.62) and abnormal atherogenic index (OR 0.38; 95% CI, 0.20-0.70).
CONCLUSION:
Occupational vanadium exposure appears to be associated with increased HDL-C and apoA-I levels and decreased atherogenic indexes. Among male workers, a significantly negative association existed between low HDL-C level, abnormal atherogenic index and occupational vanadium exposure. This suggests vanadium has beneficial effects on blood levels of HDL-C and apoA-I.

The effects of vanadyl sulphate on the formation of acrylamide have been studied in fried potato products, such as French fries and chips. Acrylamide formation was inhibited by 30.3%, 53.3% and 89.3% when the sliced potato strips were soaked in 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1 M vanadyl sulphate (VOSO(4)) solutions, respectively, for 60 min before frying. Moreover, 57.7%, 71.4% and 92.5% inhibition of acrylamide formation was observed when chips were soaked in the respective vanadyl sulphate solution before frying. In a separate model reaction, a solution containing an equimolar concentration of L-asparagine and D-glucose showed a significant inhibition of acrylamide formation when heated at 150 °C for 30 min in the presence of vanadyl sulphate (VOSO(4)). The results indicate that the binding of VO(2+) to asparagine and the decrease in the pH of the potato samples resulted in a significant reduction of acrylamide formation in fried potato products.

Vanadium belongs to the group of transition metals and is present in the air and soil contaminants in large urban agglomerations due to combustion of fossil fuels. It forms numerous inorganic compounds (vanadyl sulfate, sodium metavanadate, sodium orthovanadate, vanadium pentoxide) as well as complexes with organic compounds (BMOV, BEOV, METVAN). Depending on the research model, vanadium compounds exhibit antitumor or carcinogenic properties. Vanadium compounds generate ROS as a result of Fenton's reaction or of the reaction with atmospheric oxygen. They inactivate the Cdc25B(2) phosphatase and lead to degradation of Cdc25C, which induces G(2)/M phase arrest. In cells, vanadium compounds activate numerous signaling pathways and transcription factors, including PI3K-PKB/Akt-mTOR, NF-κB, MEK1/2-ERK, that cause cell survival or increased expression and release of VEGF. Vanadium compounds inhibit p53-dependent apoptosis and promote entry into the S phase of cells containing functional p53 protein. In addition, vanadium compounds, in particular organic derivatives, have insulin-mimetic and antidiabetic properties. Vanadium compounds lower blood glucose levels in animals and in clinical trials. They also inhibit the activity of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B. By activating the PI3K-PKB/Akt pathway, vanadium compounds increase the cellular uptake of glucose by the GLUT4 transporter. The PKB/Akt pathway is also used to inactivate glycogen synthase kinase-3. The impact of vanadium compounds on inflammatory reactions has not been fully studied. Vanadium pentoxide causes expression of COX-2 and the release of proinflammatory cytokines in a human lung fibroblast model. Other vanadium compounds activate NF-κB in macrophages by activating IKKβ.

CS - would this be a beneficial add to a lower carb/higher fat diet or is it more intended to control high blood sugar and it's negative effects? It's interesting. Saw a few reviews where people said they subbed this for Metformin which many use for anti-aging these days. I'm guessing from reading this that it would benefit my current style of eating (low carb/high fat with carb refeeds 1x a week) as well as people trying to get a handle on their blood sugar issues.

Yes, it would help....the most interesting thing is that it might be part of a missing link on baldness. In a recent study, the more severe the Norwood classification, the less vanadium they had. Also, vanadium is wasted easier in those who have glucose issues, and a deficiency is also implicated in heart disease. I have an article near completion on it.

It's fine. Brewer's yeast has chromium in it. It's fine to take extra chromium if desired.

Looking forward to the article.

Would be interesting to know the different roles of chromium and vanadium in this, and whether it is more important to focus on one than the other. Think I'll probably just get a supplement with both in for now.

I've been reading about vanadium and it's amazing what it can do. It lowers blood glucose even in type I diabetes. There are no oral medications that can do this.

CS, what do you think is the teleological explanation for this - did humans used to consume orders of magnitude more vanadium than we do now?

Also, do you think Country Life is a reliable brand?

I like to give everything a stint of supplementation just to cover my bases.

..vanadium though, never even heard of it til the other day.. sounds like something they'd use in a power plant or something lol

..so we're not sure if it's of benefit, prior evidence suggested it might be. hmmm..

Question, in your opinion whats the highest safe dose to run with?

I have a few theories (assuming there is any positive link with vanadium), one is that it does increase glutathione levels. Vanadium can boost Nrf2, which can increased glutathione production. Also vanadium is good for blood sugar and triglycerides. There's also positive effect on potassium ATP channels (a minoxidil-like mechanism) and insulin mimic.

There is vanadium in seafood, but as a supplement 10 milligrams of the sulfate form is worth a go. Other forms use microgram amounts (mcg).
