Ecklonia cava question
This is a long shot, but here goes: Does anyone know what the name of Ecklonia cava is in Korean? I found the name for it in Japanese. It's Noro-Kajime. But, i'd like to know what it's called in Korean (preferably romanized) so that i can ask for it by name at this Korean supermarket in Toronto's Koreatown.
From what i've read, it's an edible brown seaweed that's found in Korean and Japanese waters. I'm assuming Koreans and Japanese (at least some of them) use this seaweed in their cuisine/dishes. I'd like to get some of this seaweed.

Re: Ecklonia cava question
I'm sorry, but my korean is a bit rusty at the moment. I do know one thing you could do. Collect some photos from the web, print them out and hand them over to the seller. If they are serious businessmen, they will help you! Good luck.

I'd be very interested in hearing your progress on this. My friend is Korean, and I have a Japanese friend that can probably translate this for me. I can then pass the translation onto the Korean friend and hope for the best.

Re: Ecklonia cava question
hey - I come over your question to add another...
kelp issue, which is coming from the sea :
here's an extract from Dr Dr. David Brownstein on Iodine suplementation protocol website :
" My research has shown
that after testing over
4,000 patients for their
iodine levels, over 96% of
those tested are
significantly low in iodine.
Many patients ask me if
they can take kelp
instead of iodine. The
amount of iodine in kelp
can be variable.
Furthermore, I was
always concerned that
kelp supplements may
contain toxic amounts of
arsenic or halides. I have
tested 2 kelp
supplements and found
very elevated arsenic
levels in both items. Both
of these products were
marketed heavily and
sales in the millions of
dollars were reported.
When I contacted he
manufactures of these
products, neither
returned my phone calls.
Remember, if kelp is
grown in a polluted area
of the ocean, it may
contain elevated amounts
of these pollutants. New
research has validated
my findings.
etc....
But what about Ecklonia cava.....japan sea is a very polluted sea....
and i can't see no "control" protocol on best doctor
Don't you afraid of any intoxication ?

Re: Ecklonia cava question
Nid, that would be great if you can get them to translate.
@ europe
The studies done on ecklonia cava were from the samples acquired around Jeju island. It's a Korean island located south of South Korea (and west of Japan). Industrialization isn't as heavy around Jeju island as it is on mainland Korea. East Sea (or Japan Sea that you mentioned) is located east of Korea. I'm hoping to find EC that is sourced from Jeju.
If there is EC found around Okinawan waters, i'd be interested in that since Okinawa is pretty far away from the other main islands of the Japanese archipeligo. It's where a lot of chlorella comes from too. But, i have a feeling EC is only found around the other main islands of Japan and around Korean waters.

Re: Ecklonia cava question
Jeju-do is very nice, would love to revisit. Perhaps EC can be found on the tiny island of Udo which is off the coast of jeju?
I was living in Korea for about a year and sadly I lost so much hair because of pollution, heavy metals, yellow sand, stress and high pesticide content in the food. I had a weak tolerance to pollution of this kind because I live in an almost pollution free country. Most of the Korean men have full sets of jet black dyed hair! btw- Coating my hair in henna absolutely saved it from the pollution!
Anyways, I'd be very interested to hear if you find any Korean EC.

Hey jksl--
Here we go.
My buddy Hayato facebook commented me the following:
Looks like paddleweed:

My friend, Asaka, also lives in Japan and she said she'd try to find out for me as well!

Re: Ecklonia cava question
Thanks nid. Yeah, i found about paddleweed. Turns out, though, that it's a generic name for Ecklonia in general and not Ecklonia cava specifically. I actually find that it refers to Halophila ovalis (a seagrass) more than it does ecklonia.
I found something interesting while browsing around for more info on EC. Turns out that there's plenty of harvesting for this seaweed in S.Africa.

Re: Ecklonia cava question
Actually, nevermind. S.Africa harvests Ecklonia maxima, not cava.
