no flouride water..some good info and bottled water brands.... Empty water filters

Post  gregslater Mon Mar 08, 2010 7:34 pm

Cool. I was coming here to make a post about fluorinated water, and saw yours... I see the article you reference mentions the CDC's concerns of possible lead from some filtration systems. That's not a problem now with systems that use lead-free fittings and faucets, but if you are unsure and still that worried run it through a cheap water pitcher filter before drinking. :-)

Here are a few links about the lead issue:

http://www.junkscience.com/news2/filters.html
http://www.home-water-filter.com/articles/page-3/

In my continuing pursuit to get bad shit out of my water, I'm looking for the next level of water filtration. What a lot of us have gets the TDS level down, removes chlorine, etc. .... but with all the talk of Halogens... aside from chlorine, how good does your setup do at reducing fluoride? Unless you use reverse osmosis or a specific activated-alumina defluoridation filter, then nothing. If all you are using is pitcher filters like Brita, Pur or even the better units like ZeroWater, which are better than nothing mind you, you likely aren't addressing this problem.

I already use a whole house filtration system, ZeroWater pitcher filters, and VitaShower VS-1 shower filters. But I'm looking at a 14 stage system that uses various filters, RO , UV, etc.

On the ZeroWater filters... check this out from their FAQ:

Q. Does the filter remove Floride?
A. ZeroWater filters provide water that does not have additives like fluoride.

Hmm... doesn't seem likely given the composition of their 5-stage filters. And if they really did remove Fluoride seems like they would have said 'Yes' to the question. Perhaps I'm not reading between the lines here as it is 3:30am and I'm about to fall out. scratch

gregslater - If possible you should try and set up a water tank to capture rain water. I know not even rainwater is 100% safe these days(especially if you live in or near a city) but its a million times better then tap or even bottled water! After drinking rain water for a number of years, I struggle even drinking filtered tap water as I can taste the distinct difference.

That is essentially what rainwater is.

My dad has used used rain water (and condensers) for years in back home in TN, and the quality of the water is not good enough... still needs filtration for drinking. I may set one up here eventually, but I would not trust it for drinking as-is.

What are your guys thoughts on drinking distilled water? There's a huge debate on this (bottled drinking vs. distilled). As far as I know, distilled water has no minerals, flouride or chlorine in it.

I've noticed a huge difference in some skin problems improving since trying distilled. But, I believe they use distilled in soft drinks, so I didn't know if this was maybe a problem with the pancreas study that came out recently, since it can't all be from sugar and phosphorus (?)

What do you think?

yah I was talking about this earlier. Basically distilled water really doesn't have anything in it. (good or bad) Thats means no minerals either. So I guess the question would be how much daily mineral content are you losing by drinking distilled vs mineral or tap water? I dont know. If I had to make a guess on it, id say it probably wouldnt matter as long as you were getting enough minerals from your diet. I mean, is there data somewhere on amount and type of minerals that bottled or other water has? CS had said earlier that he's leary of distilled water because of the fact that it doesnt have minerals. I personally drink some of both, so make what you will of that

My concern with distilled water is that it takes away existing body minerals. From Mercola, "Distilled water should also be avoided because it has the wrong ionization, pH, polarization and oxidation potentials, and can drain your body of necessary minerals. It has been tied to hair loss, which is often associated with certain mineral deficiencies."

Plus, possibly other concerns.

Borax (sodium borate, NOT boric acid) can be used to remove flouride from water. Sodium Thiosulphate is used to remove Chlorine, Chloramines and other contaminants. Both very helpful.

Prill water is water made from magnesium oxide beads. The beads are put into water, transform it, and then that water is poured off and you can keep making water from that. It's a new-age thing. Let me know what you think about it.

edony - I drink reverse osmosis water.

Whip - Interesting stuff, I've always been interested in structured water. Will have to study more about how prill beads work.

IH, based on your post about getting your water from a water store, I looked around and found one in my area. Unfortunately it's new and the guy didn't have his literature yet. It's reverse osmosis, I know it removed chlorine, what about flouride?

Thanks CS, I tried the prill beads a few years ago, and I don't remember because the hair was doing well at that time. It's cool because it does reinforce the magnesium route, and I believe there are many benefits to internal and external health from using it. I keep thinking about adding liquids to or altering the water to meet our requirements without having flouride, chlorine, etc.

This is a really interesting take on all this:

looks like they test all bottled water.

I'm drinking Volvic (france) water which has 0.17 flouride ppm at 1.5L bottle....
