Can aloe vera cause cancer?

For the last six months I have been buying fresh aloe vera leaves, scooping out the gel and adding it to my smoothies on a daily basis for healthy hair, skin and digestion. To my shock and horror, I've recently found information that aloe vera can cause cancer due to aloin, the potentially cancer-causing compound found in the leaf.  It especially affects the intestines.
Can anyone here elaborate on this? Or is it just another smear campaign against natural healing compounds? Very confusing as I thought if anything aloe vera actually treats cancer. Thanks in advance.

I read the paper and to summarize, it's protective against cancer via programmed cell death (apoptosis)

So either the reporter didn't understand the language or they are trying to scare people.

"In conclusion, Aloin promoted gastric cancer cell apoptosis by inhibiting the expression and release of HMGB1, and phosphorylation of ATK-mTOR-P70S6K and ERK-P90RSK-CREB pathways. I looked around a little. A website claimed it causes cancer in rats?

According to this study, it's the opposite.

Thank you CS for your replies and taking the time to look into this. I agree - certainly a case of fear mongering and/or misinterpreting results of the study. I will now continue taking my aloe vera and I'm sure it will contribute to my good health. Thanks again. Much appreciated.
