What does itching on scalp mean?

Hello,

I just had a short question.

When using a topical before bed, and then in the middle of the night you wake up and your scalp itches and you need you scratch it (very shortly) and then it subsides again shortly afterwards, then what does that mean?
Does it mean that something positive is happening (e.g. new hairs are growing)? Or does it mean that the topical is not good (e.g. allergic reaction)?

there's a good chance it could jsut be something from the topical that isn't being absorbed and is drying on your head leaving a film/residue in the morning.
