The best natural 5-alpha reductase type 2 inhibitor?
Just wondering
Apparently black tea is a fairly strong 5ar1 inhibitor, beta-sit.. is it true it works more by blocking receptors and reducing estradiol?
So.. what is the best natural 5ar2 inhibitor?
A few spring to mind but I don't want to bias the thread!
And am I right in saying that black tea is probably the best natural type 1 inhibitor? Or is there something I'm missing?
Hoppi!

There are several methods included for 5 alpha reductase treatment. Some of the treatments available for baldness or DHT are Minoxidil, Finasteride and Dutasteride etc. From all these treatments, Minoxidil is most effective treatment for DHT or baldness and patients should apply it on the scalp.

Based on the number of articles and (sometimes dubious) studies I've read I'd say Saw Palmetto is still the best "natural" 5ar inhibitor. I'm currently experimenting with it as a topical as I've lost faith in supplementing with it - it just doesn't affect the serum levels of DHT like Finasteride does. Internally, it's only good for the prostate IMO.

hehe - spam alert!
Erm, I beliiieeve SP binds to androgen receptors...
But is there really any advantage to using it over pure beta-sitosterol?

Oh, and I thought you said your regimen was proving successful NS? I could be wrong, but I remember that coming up at one point!

Not me, I've only ever said I found results to be "OK". I'm still losing my hair unfortunately.
I understand beta-sis is considered the active ingredient in Saw Palmetto but you never know, there might be other things in it that are beneficial. One of the big beta-sis studies is actually a combo of beta-sis + Saw palmetto, its all very confusing.

Beta-sitosterol is probably the strongest 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor.

It's weird how beta-sitosterol (and other "natural" reductase inhibitors, for that matter) fall far short of duplicating the effects of finasteride.
But instead of taking the quick-fix short cut, we're trying to stop hair loss naturally. Yes, it's disheartening sometimes -- especially in today's instant-gratification scene -- but it's viable in the long-term and healthier, too.
With the enormous amount of underground research done here, I wouldn't be surprised to see a "cure" in our lifetime.

The cure will come when there is no more profits to be made off baldness.

That's why you have the underground.
Not to romanticize the alternative hair loss help scene -- because it has its flaws -- but its ethos generally rejects the rampant commercialism and exploitation of the mainstream.
There are shady characters in every movement but I've gotten to know some awesome posters on this forum who are genuinely interested -- no, obsessed -- with defeating hair loss.
If we stay in the current, lifeless, money-hungry paradigm promoted by Machiavellian pharmaceuticals then yes, misterE, the cure is unattainable.
But I refuse to believe that there aren't alternatives to pharmaceutical reality. There ARE alternatives, and you're witnessing it right here & now.

I agree. The paradigm is shifting.
