sugar and grains
Dr. Mercola says to elinimate sugars and grains to keep your hair. My question is, what about sourdough bread and organic brown rice. Are those ok to eat?

Does that include the simple sugars from fresh fruit?

1..... - For most people Sourdough bread and brown rice will be okay. However, there are always exceptions to the rule.
Hydrogenated oils, Refined grains, (all wheat/gluten for some), refined sugars should be kept to a minimum.

cs and jdp,
You guys talk about having a cave man diet then adding things to see if you react to it. My question is how do you know if you react to it or not?

YEs, i remember reading this on dr. mercola website awhile back, saying controlling insulin will have a dramatic effect on preventing hair loss; he said he blames his hairloss because he use to be a high carb grain addict he says..
I do believe controlling insulin, optimizing thyroid, estrogens and nutrients will prevent hair loss in most men.

So no fastfood, pizza, anything fried, pasta, rice, anything with cabs or bread....can I ask what you guys DO eat? Because that eliminates about 80% of my diet. I could use some suggestions, because fruit and salad all day everyday isn't gonna work

Grains
Hey everyone,
I've been reading the forum for a while, but have never posted. Just wanted to chime in on this topic.
With my own personal experience, I've noticed much more hair loss/shed when my diet has been heavy on carbs and sugars.
The last three months, I have tried to cut out all grains, legumes, and sugar as much as I can. That includes bread, rice, potatoes, beans and obviously processed carbs. I haven't been perfect. However, I have noticed my shedding has slowed significantly. Hasn't been long enough for the possibility of regrowth, but I am satisfied with the progress I've seen thus far.
To Big Mike...focus on vegetables, fruit, meat, and nuts/seeds. Use fresh herbs to spice up your meals. Don't be afraid of healthy fats. You have to do a lot of cooking yourself, but its well worth it. I have experienced clearer skin and some weight less as well.
Cheers.

thanks MilBA....does anyone know if red meat is ok or should we stick to white meat?

Re: sugar and grains
big mike - Red meat is okay, even better if it's grass-fed. Omega-3 fatty acid will help balance out some of the potential negatives if it's not grass-fed.

If sourdough bread is ok, i'm assuming corn tortillas are also since they are gluten free, correct?
Also, what is your take on cheese and butter? Ok or not?
Thanks

Re: sugar and grains
big mike - Despite the mycotoxin content in corn, I believe a great deal of us have tolerate corn. Certainly there are those who will not. Personally I can get away with eating corn anything--even cornbread with no apparently problems. Wheat seems to be a different story, especially when sugar is present--so it would seem the gluten free factor really counts a lot.
While cheese can potentially have an adverse effect, but generally not. Personally I can eat all the cheese I want with no negatives. However, cheese can have negative effects in some individuals.
Butter is great. Margarine is highly anti-hair and anti-health.

Re: sugar and grains
RobHealthMan - Besides various allergy tests, check to see if any inflammation occurs days following.

Re: sugar and grains
CS all the butter ,milk and cheese i can find are pasteurised.Even the organic ones.
Do you believe they are safe.
Also even organic products are usually produced by animals that are fed with gluten or corn,so that essentialy passes in the dairy products. What about this hidden gluten factor?

Re: sugar and grains
edony - Pasteurized milk is the one to avoid. Cheese isn't usually a problem for most. Animals that are grain-fed will not transfer a wheat/gluten problem, but the nutrient composition isn't going to be optimal. However, that's where the supplements come in.

Re: sugar and grains
RobHealthMan - I'm not sure, however there seem to be a number of innovative at home tests coming out.
Hopefully someone here will know of one.

What is your recommendation on fruit? Should intake be limited (if so how much) due to sugar or is it fairly safe?
thanks

Re: sugar and grains
big mike - Eating whole fruit is safe for a variety of reasons. Drinking fruit juice on the other hand can spur on insulin release.

Does orange juice 100 % not from concentrate count? Also if you don't think your sensitive to gluten, what about raw wheat germ.

fadero - Good point, I did some checking and the results were interesting:
http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/publications.htm?SEQ_NO_115=215944
Orange juice is okay.
Wheat germ is an excellent source of tocotrienols, B-complex and other nutrients. If you're not sensitive to wheat/gluten it would be great.

Re: sugar and grains
Sorry but I rather have thinning hair than do this
i used to try to follow a diet like this, you walk into the supermarket and you cant buy anything
i was down to 157lbs at 6 feet tall
what is life for if you have to eat a diet like this
Plus once i started on the dht blockers saw palmetto etc and the maxi hair, i could eat whatever I wanted and my hair got better and better every year
so I think this diet is BS basically
