Re: Orthosilicic acid
Look what I´ve found on a women forum :
Well, they are different things. Viviscal is made of silica (from the marine proteins) and silica is supposedly VERY good for our hair... i bet you can find a cheaper brand of silica at the grocery store or a vitamin store. Horsetail contains a high amount of silica, but long term use isn't good - it can cause kidney damage. Here's a quote from the web
"Pregnant or nursing women and people with severe kidney or liver disease should consult their health practitioner before using horsetail. People with high blood pressure or heart problems should not take horsetail. Horsetail contains low levels of nicotine and may not be safe for young children. Horsetail shouldn't be taken internally for more than three days, and people should not take more than the normal dosage. Long-term use or high doses of horsetail have caused irreversible kidney damage due to too much silica. It is best to follow dosage guidelines and use properly harvested horsetail since the older shoots are higher in silica."
i would think you would need to pay attention to your silica intake whether on Viviscal, horsetail, or pure silica...
I think I´m gonna give up,every thing has side effects.

Re: Orthosilicic acid
sissi - The silica content in horsetail has nothing to do with the negative effects reported. The reason Horsetail may have potential side effects is due to a mechanism to lowers potassium and disrupts vitamin B1 (Thiamine).
As far as silica is concerned, a kind which is very safe is called Bio Sil from Jarrow.

Re: Orthosilicic acid
sissi - That product is fine.
You might want to check with their customer service, normally those orders can be tracked.
