So far, i've only tried Lewis Labs so i can't really compare with any others in regards to taste. But, Lewis Labs seemed to be the most natural and gluten-free so i went with it. Twinlab is debittered, so i think it's processed. NOW has added synthetic vitamins - you may as well just buy a b-complex supplement instead.

You should consider Stabilized Rice Bran as a food source for B vitamins and more. It is truly a superfood that packs a major punch; in fact i do not use it because it gives me so much energy i can't sleep, although it is not a stimulant.

Swansons source is top notch, but I've had one other brand that was superior, but more expensive.

I really don't know which is the best brewer's yeast, but for the sake of convenience, I like to take it in tablet form since I can just pop several before eating a meal. I've been quite happy using this brand:

Almost forgot, plus the top testimonial for the product is pretty interesting:

"I started taking Brewer`s yest because I had acne breakouts at 33 yr old. Since I started taking this product (about 3 weeks now), the difference is remarkable almost all my acne is gone and my skin is clear. I will continue using this product for sure."

CS - please, note also this :

"each tab only contains an extremely low amount of vitamin content...so u need to take 30 tab a day to get same content as 2 tablespoons of "NOW powered Brewers Yeast". i personally take 32/day. Which i dont mind because i cant do tablespoons...i need tablet form. so buy 2 (500 tab) containers to get 1 month supply. Do ure own reasearch if u think i'm wrong. (but i'm not...lol) "

So, 30 tabs a day (2 bottles a month)

Ok for the price, but what is bothering me is the other ingredients, bedises brewer's yeast:

Stearic Acid (vegetable source), Croscarmellose Sodium and Magnesium Stearate (vegetable source).

30 par day of this is a lot....
a lot to be avoid preferably, no ?

And this is precisely why i went for the Lewis Labs Brewer's Yeast. 100% pure with nothing added. A serving of this stuff is 2 tbsp which is 30 grams. I really HATE fillers. I just can't stand garbage like stearic acid, calcium diphosphate, magnesium stearate, etc. Magnesium stearate is known to leave a scummy film on the skin. That's some pretty dirty stuff to ingest, though i'm sure there's even worse garbage in certain McFoods and salad dressings.

europe - Yes the amount of brewer's yeast to take would be a lot to equal, say the RDA. That doesn't really matter, because in natural, non-synthetic isolate form it is isn't the "weight" or milligrams that matter, it is the power of the natural source. A small amount of brewer's yeast b vitamins will outmatch several times the amounts of synthetic isolates.

I'll pop anywhere from 5 to 10 per meal, but it's no big deal. There are some sites that vilify magnesium Stearate, but I really do not believe this is a problem.

I guess as jksl pointed out, there's probably a lot worse things in McDonald's.

I think you have mentioned this before CS, but wanted to double check. For Brewer's Yeast all the nutrition isn't going to be on the label due to some FDA bs right?

Cool because I see one from Swanson's but the label really seems lacking. I was hoping that this was the reason because it seems like it is a good price.

Post  JJB9050 Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:02 am

I got some brewer's yeast from barryfarm.com where I ordered my buckwheat and carob. The price is like 4.59 a pound which isn't too bad. It's a little bitter but I don't mind the taste. I used twinlabs before that which had the bitterness removed. I don't know if that makes a difference in nutrition but I prefer as little processing as possible. Lewis labs looks like another good brand.

I would opt for the powder to get more of my moneys worth. I like to mix it in my morning tea that I drink either before (yerba mate) or with (green tea) breakfast.

zerx - Brewer's yeast contains vitamin B4 (not found in regular b-vitamins), it cannot be synthesized. It also contains beta glucan, chromium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, and selenium. Even has the mineral tin which may or may not be good for hair loss (evidence only in animals so far).

Overall there's 14 minerals, and 17 vitamins . It's also loaded in protein and RNA and I think there's something to having a source of RNA for hair.

For whatever reason this combination of natural sources seems to improve acne and I'm not sure what else might be in there, but it works better than the "drug-like" B-complex isolates for sale.

Yeah, I found it when looking for buckwheat. It was nice they had carob as well. They have gluten free and organic stuff which is nice. www.sunorganicfarm.com is another site with a similar selection. The shipping wasn't bad when you consider i ordered 5lbs of buckwheat flour plus a few 1 lb containers of other stuff here and there and only paid like $10 for shipping. It's really great if you're into baking and want healthier flours and ingredients.

Post  Paradox Tue Sep 22, 2009 5:08 pm

I ordered the Twinlab one from iherb, and for never using Brewer's yeast before (nothing to compare it to), I think it's really good. I seem to feel 'better', and the taste can be overcome by adding fruit to it and blending it up. I am curious about the Nutritional Yeast that Now sells, as I just found out that brewer's yeast DOES contain gluten, and I'm trying to eliminate all gluten. CS, or anybody else have any opinions on traditional B.Y. vs. the Nutritional Yeast? I'm assuming there is no B4 in the N.Y.? CS- Is the B4 worth the gluten trade off? What specifically are the benefits of B4, and why did the FDA (I'm guessing) decide it was not an essential vitamin/and or not need to be supplemented?

For anyone who wants to try this. This is my standard 'feel good', 'energy', 'meal replacement' type shake with Brewer's Yeast. It is really filling and basically a liquid meal I drink usually twice a day. Any thoughts on it, or potential additions are welcome. Here it is:

*One scoop Now Whey protein Isolate (sugar free- made with stevia) mixed with water, or occasionally rice milk
*at least 5 grams of glutamine
*One or two Tbspns of Now Lecithin granules
*Some kind of fruit (usually Bananas or berries)
*One massive heaping tbspn of Twinlabs brewer's yeast
*A few drops of Now liquid stevia extract to make sure and cover the taste of the glutamine and BY
-OPTIONAL: One tbspn of almond butter (good with the bananas. Especially with the chocolate whey protein), and sometimes some taurine- few grams.

I mentioned this already in this thread, but Lewis Lab's brewer's yeast does NOT contain gluten. Also, both NOW brand's nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast contain synthetic vitamins. NOW's yeast brands are NOT all-natural.

Probably not. When i first looked at the nutritional facts, i thought vitamin serving amounts were in mg so i was sure they had to be added (i didn't read the description either). Now, i see they're in mcg. Anyway, I guess the only things added to the BY in your link are Stearic Acid (vegetable source), Croscarmellose Sodium and Magnesium Stearate (vegetable source). The nutritional yeast by NOW has synthetic vitamins added to it though, that's for sure.

Post  europe Thu Oct 22, 2009 5:41 am

CS - They added Vitamins in the powder form because it's a nutritional yeast compared to the"brewer's yeast" communly know...

* nutritional yeast ( perhaps also called active yeast, more like the one used by the backers to make their bread) is made from BEET ESSENTIALY:

EXAMPLE : NOW®️ pleasant tasting Nutritional Yeast Powder is produced from a specially selected strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This yeast is grown on enriched purified cane and beet molasses under carefully controlled conditions. This is a primary grown yeast and is therefore NOT a brewery by-product as is brewer's yeast. This ensures freedom from Candida albicans yeast.

* Brewer's yeast ( perhaps called passive one, and used in flakes forms, powder, natural, unbittered, whatever, is a "dead" yeast) BUT is made from Grains, fermented barley ( malt):

EXAMPLE : * Nutritional Supplement
* 10 Grain
* 650 mg
* GMP Quality Assured
* A Dietary Supplement
* Vegetarian Formula

Brewer's Yeast contains several naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients.

As you can see, 10 grains...mmmhhhhh....malt, barley and others....
So that kind of yeast generally CONTAINS GLUTEN. In europe, coeliac association forbid that king of yeast, but not the active one, the one that backers use.

Speaking of the NOW's brand: one intersing note. CS, you stated that on iherb' site they wrote NO gluten. I checked and that is right.

But in fact, They are lying.
Go to NOW's site and see by yourself that the magic word GLUTEN has disappaered, unfortunatly.
Contains no: sugar, salt, starch, wheat, corn, soy, milk, egg, shellfish or preservatives.
http://www.nowfoods.com/Products/M003562.htm

* Third point : Why is that the lewis lab is specified as a "inactive yeast" and they state NO GLUTEN...
The answer is in the process of fabrication : not from malt, barley, rains, but from beet that DO not contain gluten.

* No Trans Fat
* 100% Pure - Premium - Imported
* Gluten Free, Non-GMO
* Not Blended or Fortified - Nothing Added
* Superb Taste - Exceptional Nutritional Content
* Dietary Supplement

This is the only Brewer's Yeast that actually tastes good! Absolutely NO after-taste. Totally digestible. It will change your idea of what Brewer's Yeast really is.

This premium yeast is grown on sugar beets which are known to absorb nutrients from the soil faster than almost any other crop. As a result, this yeast is exceptionally rich in Selenium, Chromium, Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium, Copper, Manganese, Iron, Zinc, and other natural factors natural to yeast. Gluten free.

http://www.iherb.com/Lewis-Labs-International-Brewer-s-Yeast-16-oz-454-g/6071?at=0

CONCLUSION :

Be careful of the labels, and be sure of the process of fabrication.
A yeast from the beet is the only assurance of a non gluten product.

And for a personnal note, i'm fucked for many years with one that i buy....
Only if we care about gluten , though !

Sorry for the lengh...
