Why is it that every Yoga mom under the sun now knows about gluten? I remember avoiding gluten about 4 years ago when I only lurked these forums. Now there are videos on youtube–of all places–making fun of gluten intolerance and how ridiculous the entirety of gluten-free is. The time has come where everyone thinks they are a licensed nutritionist and knows EXACTLY what the body needs. Does gluten really cause all this inflammation and cause all problems that we know of? Even mental fogginess?!

I have been gluten free entirely for 2 years at one point, but now I eat a bagel every so often and don't notice inflammation. So, can someone please post reputable sources of gluten actually harming people or their hair? What experiences have you guys had with gluten as a whole if you experimented with it.

Trace amounts of gluten don't seem to affect me, but if I eat a substantial amount, then it really does affect me - inc. causing total galea inflammation. I don't precisely know why this prompts an immune reaction in this particular area, but no doubt about it, that if I remained on a diet of gluten, then I'd be bald as a coot within a year or two.

I remember when I thought I'd eradicated most gluten from my diet, and started eating those sea food sticks.... a while later my scalp was stinging like a mofo. Then I realized that imitation sea food sticks are gluten.

I never notice inflammation anymore, but I have been vegan for a while. I still don't notice it with bagels.

I think it's the herbicide more so than the gluten itself.

Because it's become a trend. Lab tests for gliaden antibodies are popular now, but diagnostically practically useless. Everyone and their cousin thinks they are gluten intolerant. It also stems from the, "I eliminated gluten and I feel great!" stories that spread. So people just get rid of gluten to see if they feel better. Many of these people are trying to become regular (bowel movements). Gluten is sticky and constipating. So many people just go gluten free so they can take normal dumps.

Gluten "intolerance" is a new thing. It's like sub-clinical celiac disease. There is a trend now to look at disease on a spectrum rather than waiting until they get to be full blown. So now we have things like adrenal fatigue, which is like sub-clinical addisons. We also have sub-clinical thyroid disorders. We are trying to catch things early on now which is a great idea in theory, but with it can also come lots of flase- diagnosis, and debate about what is normal and what is not.

Suffered a scalp flare up last night; not only was it inflamed but itchy, too. So I was like, 'WTF is causing this now?? As far as I can tell, all inflammatory triggers are under control'. Then I realized that it must have been something I ate -- something containing gluten. So I backtrack on what I had eaten during the day, and I realized that I had some mix variety biscuits to eat (something I don't normally eat). So, I check the ingredients, and lo and behold - every damn biscuit contains gluten.

IDK what the hell it is TBH, but there is something within gluten which sparks an inflammatory response specifically within scalp follicles.

Very strange, but very true.

You can suffer from gluten intolerance and have no noticeable symptoms, so it's worth going gluten free in my opinion.

i have celiac disease and i am gluten free since age 3. maybe i accidentally eat some small thing containing gluten once per year if that. still having hair loss, scalp itch and other issues. of course, it might be just one piece of the puzzle and i might be missing all the others... but i still don't have the feeling that gluten free diet is doing something special regarding my hair loss.

My belief is that far less people have immune reactions to gluten than peanuts, which is something like .5-1.0% of the population. Although peanut allergies likely correlate with peanut oil once being used as an vaccine adjuvant.

The same misconceptions about gluten exist about saturated fat based on how it reacts outside of the body. OMG! Saturated fat is going to solidify in your arteries and kill you. wrong. Or gluten is going to get sticky inside of your gut and obstruct transit. nope.

If you are allergic to gluten, either a) overcome it by increasing your immunity and overall gut health with enzymes and probiotics etc. or b) avoid at all costs. Just as I was able to overcome my sensitivities to milk sugar and reverse my lactose intolerance, so too can someone overcome a sensitivity or immune reaction to gluten.

I also made many visits to an immunologist as a child and shots never helped. Now those allergies are completely gone as an adult, just by knowing enough about my own body, medicine and science.

However, if you truly had a medical issue with gluten you would KNOW it.

Otherwise gluten is probably the newest catchphrase to sell product. My recommendation is to avoid refined carbohydrates more than gluten itself. Get all your carbs from vegetables and fruits.

4039 - are you telling me one can overcome celiac disease with diet and supplements? i have been living for 20 years in belief that celiac disease is cureless and only option is to obey gluten free diet without exceptions.

You could be the exception and that's unfortunate.

There's a good chance your immune system was weakened and never given the chance to fully recover. Celiac is just one branch of a large immunological tree. And immunity starts in the bones/glands, but more importantly the gut. It's a catch-22 trying to heal something in constant rigorous use.

I believe it's not so much what we eat making us sick, it's the imbalance we cause when not eating certain things. We eat too much muscle meat, not enough bone and organ meat. And when people do eat healthy, they get way too many fruits and not enough leafy greens. Fermented foods are also super great for gut health.

As your immune system builds itself and your gut reestablishes proper flora/fauna and enzymes, it's able to tackle greater loads. Just as your muscles need exercise, so too does your immune system.

From my own anecdotal successes, I have totally reversed my severe allergies (with headaches requiring hospitalization) and food sensitivities. I have also helped people reverse some pretty serious gut issues.
