white rice
I was checking one of the links that rdkml posted and I read this:
Avoid junk food - things made in factories. Chemically altered (hydrogenated) oils, or oils that have been heated to high temperatures, white flour products (like pasta), white rice, refined sugar, caffeine, and so on.
I thought that white rice was good..?

Re: white rice
Your always going to come across opposing views. Do some research for yourself and try and learn to read how YOUR body responds to different foods. An elimination diet is a good place to start.
Its hard man but your never going to get anywhere by just listening to what someone else says (I use to do exactly that by the way).

Re: white rice
Rdkml turned me on to the problem of lectins. Rice, pound for pound, contains less anti-nutrients than other grains, but it does contain lectins. Lectins can be a problem for the gut immune system. This is a constantly evolving area of knowledge. Certain information seems to point to the fact that some lectins can prevent bacterial/viral adhesion to the epithelial cells. But other evidence shows some lectins can actually help usher bacterial/viruses into the cells of the intestine. The lectins bind sugars on the host cell but also bind to bacterial cells. They attach to the gut and then get taken in by the cell and can take in microorganisms with them.
The jury isn't totally out on the complex role of lectins in the diet. But we do know certain lectins, like those in beans, can be a problem.
In terms of its nutritional value, white rice is just starch energy. The way someone handles starch is based completely on their own constitution and activity level. Just in terms of nutrition, white rice can be fine, or it can be a problem. If you're insulin sensitive and require the energy, white rice is fine. If not, starch of any kind is a problem.
But we don't metabolize food in a vaccum, so we do have to think about things like lectin and phytate. Honestly though, I'm more concerned about the lectins in legumes and wheat than I am of the lectins in rice. But that stands to change.

Re: white rice
Here's my 2 cents: It depends on the type of white rice. I eat a lot of rice. However, I only eat Jasmine and
(Japanese) short-grain cultivars.
I avoid brown rice, and Basmati rice.
Personally I don't eat to live....a little bit of variety is needed. So, sure white rice less nutrient dense? No worries...what I worry about is the fermentation product. Jasmine and Japanese rice (unlike the other variety) will not contribute to gut problems.

It has highly fermentable fiber. I think all in all rice itself is fairly a low issue compared to other types of food.
From a digestion standpoint, white rice is simply (if the right kind) better for this purpose.

but brown rice is unprocessed, its just the complete grain with all nutrient. If you soak if for at least 16h in water at 45°C you will greatly enhance his nutrient content and remove the anti nutrient ones. Its one of the most complete ingredient i founded, its also full of niacin, zinc and essential amino acid
