Anti-Histamines and Scalp Itch
I've always had allergies for as long as I can remember... and have been taking anti-histamines (Reactine) for a long time. I notice on some nights when I have some pretty rough scalp itch and slight itching elsewhere on my body, that taking a reactine helps the scalp itch as well, and decreases it pretty signicantly. Could my scalp itch be caused by allergies? or at least heightened by it? Is using Reactine bad for hair?
thanks

Re: Anti-Histamines and Scalp Itch
Mast cell degranulation has been observed in MPB hair follicles. It's the process by which resident white blood cells release chemical signals into the surrounding interstitium, initiating an inflammatory process. This faulty immune response is an often overlooked component of MPB.
Maybe the anti-histamine agent you're taking prevents mast cell degranulation.

Re: Anti-Histamines and Scalp Itch
somewhere else on this forum people pointed to a study on endocannabinoids affecting the hair: https://immortalhair.forumotion.com/t4770-cannabinoids-inhibit-hair-growth
but, if mast cell degranulation has a role in MPB, then the endocannabinoid PEA (palmitoylethanolamide) should help downregulate mast cell degranulation better than anything else.
i had just started trying it towards the end of 2010 - both systemically via a tablet and topically on my temples via a cream - when i read the above post, got scared and decided to stop it.
CS and others, what's your take?
thanks!

Re: Anti-Histamines and Scalp Itch
I wrote an article about this quite some time ago. This is a plus for hair. Not to be confused with other studies which are unrelated.
