For those serious about maca, this is the best product I have used to date:

http://www.naturalhi.com/products/Macalibrium.aspx

It came highly recommended to me.

I currently take 4 am and 4 pm.

I find soy protein to be a great adjunct to maca in general, which may be in line with prague's experience combining low level phytoestrogens with maca.

Is this red maca?

Not sure how to differentiate, but this is definitely the type of maca you want. Whether it is worth the premium is open to debate.

That's just too expensive, one month for almost $40? I need a cheaper source for the real deal (red) maca.

This is what I am currently using and is the product that turned me on to maca; it's available at Whole Foods for slightly less money:

Misi, I have no clue - I ordered a pound of the Red Stuff, it came yesterday, I will start using them from today.

I think a dose of 3-4g a day, so a pound should get you going 450/4 = 100 days?

Taking a close look at Revolution brand Maca, it uses Lepidium peruvianum type maca. This is the only study I could find on it, and by the looks of it, would be
terrific for the adrenal glands.

Phytother Res. 2004 Jun;18(6):471-4.
Lepidium peruvianum chacon restores homeostasis impaired by restraint stress.
López-Fando A, Gómez-Serranillos MP, Iglesias I, Lock O, Upamayta UP, Carretero ME.

Dpto Farmacología, Facultad de Farmacia, Universidad Complutense, Madrid, Spain.

Lepidium peruvianum root has been traditionally utilized by native Peruvians, since before the time of the Incas, for both nutritional and putative medicinal purposes as an adaptogen and also to enhance fertility in humans and animals. The present research was conducted to evaluate the anti-stress activity of the methanolic extract of Lepidium peruvianum. The drug is capable of attenuating or even eliminating variations in homeostasis produced by stress since it reduces or abolishes stress-induced ulcers, elevated corticosterone levels, the reduction of glucose and the increase in the weight of adrenal glands produced by stress. It also eliminates the decrease in free fatty-acids (FFA) in plasma produced by stress and we obtain a positive result in the forced-swimming test. Thus, it did not appear to affect restraint stress-induced immunosuppression.

What the Revolution Maca brand has done is narrow down the phenotypes, which are numerous, that are best suited for a man. They ran many trials before coming up with a a 3 phenotype proprietary blend, which yes is toasted/cooked.

That's not to say other Maca products aren't effective, and who knows there may be one that suits your chemistry randomly better. However, this company has put its dollars in researching and developing a something specific for men which I'm gonna run with.

All said, most agree there isn't bad maca. This product is just highly refined, which demands a premium.

CS--
From my understanding the species names are all used interchanged and aren't a good marker for distinction.

I have been taking a heaping teaspoon of this MYCA for last couple weeks, not religiously, but 5 days out of a week. At the moment, I feel no real changes due this - but it may be early. From what I understand MYCA is kind of an adaptogenic supplement that helps to fix the underlying infrastructure and will take time to show up as tangible benefits.

I do feel some warmth a little after taking this drink - but that lasts for may be 10-15 minutes.

Perhaps 6-8 weeks into it would be a better checkpoint

I think it must be helping already, $30 for a pound that probably costs not much to grow and cultivate is sure to add to the world economy ;-)

On a serious note - my understanding (may be flawed) that MYCA influences the endocrine system (pituitary/adrenal --> hormones --> chemicals and messages --> etc) and as such in theory it would take time to balance out the delicate system. As en example, it takes months if not years to rebuilt adrenals ~ there is no easy fix (again based on what has been reported by sufferers and practitioners).

It doesn't take that long to perceive an effect.

I'd say after a month (max), if you cannot perceive anything, move on, (or try the brand I recommended if you are in doubt about the product you sampled and want to be certain of maca's potential).

Well, I am not running with a Flag Pole all day long and the neighbors have not reported any perverted behavior either to the authroties yet...

Chief, what else are we supposed to get as an "effect" ~ joking aside, exactly what am I looking for as a confirmation that my stuff is any good?

My sense is that that sort of perverted behavior is more a symptom of overstimulated adrenals: the opposite of a Maca effect.

That said, I have noted increased sperm production and strength (quantifiable evidence), but more so, vitality if you will, a heightened sense of well being.

Not that which drives one to an end, but rather one that attracts.

That said, i am also back on 7-HMR, which I think is top-notch as well, but different.

Having tried a couple premium Maca brands, I am sticking with Revolution Maca. This delivers precisely what i expect from Maca, which is increased sperm count, raised libido, adrenal rest, and increased athletic endurance.

Don't think it helps the prostate.

But 7-HMR undoubtedly does.

Do you mean an increase in semen volume? Semen is mostly fluid from the cowper's gland, seminal vesicle's and the prostate. I think it would be near impossible to discern and increase in sperm numbers by eye... and I wouldn't suggest trying Wink

google it, and you'll see that maca is reputed for raising sperm count.

however, if it makes u happy man, call it semen volume.
