Immune system and hair growth
I recall watching a documentary television program about organ transplant many years ago and a person was required to take the immune suppressing drug cyclosporine.
Before his surgery he was suffering from extreme balding and was very wrinkly and ematiated looking.
They did a followup on his progress after surgery and I noticed that he was now overweight with a puffy bloated face and had a full thick head of hair.
Cyclosporine causes hypertrichosis in some people...

If the immune system must be compromised in order to regrow a full head of hair it appears to be a risky endeavor.

Note
Increase hair growth is a temporary side effect of cyclosporine. Although bald patients appreciate the new hair growth, women are not so appreciative.

Re: Immune system and hair growth
Yes, Cyclosporine is well documented to grow hair. Unfortunately, it's serious poison.

CS - about immune system functioning properly... have you heard about a product called Born Again Colostrum ? Supposedly people with autoimmune diseases like MS and Revm. Arthritis have good results with it.
Suitable for hairloss ?

Re: Immune system and hair growth
immune system is the most important system of the body when it comes to preventing diseases, a weak immune system increases the chances of becoming ill with any type of infection, low immunity, hair grows from cells located at the base of the hair follicle. Hair follicles continuously cycle through growth, rest, and re-growth phases,A specialised cluster of dermal cells under the epithelial layer stimulates the stem cells to grow a hair follicle.

Re: Immune system and hair growth
So what options do we have besides suppressing the immune system? How do probiotics fit into this? Also what about immuno modulators such as DIM?

Also I've read before that ketoconazole affects the immune system. I wonder if this is why it is beneficial for MPB?

Re: Immune system and hair growth
So I guess the idea is that by suppressing the immune system, you spare the attack on your follicles? I remember reading somewhere that Curcumin suppresses the immune system to a certain degree. Then again, there is alot more that Curcumin does for hairloss. Current thought on Probiotics then could be that it corrects your immune system and/or maybe desensitizes it from acting on your follicles. Or just the Leaky Gut theory. Overall, I think this topic needs to replace the diet debate as it's much more interesting than hurting yourself to save some hair.

Re: Immune system and hair growth
I've been doing some more digging about this whole immune system and hair growth think and I'm convince that theres a link between the immune system and hormones. Estrogens are immunomodulators and it seems that estriol is protective agaisnt autoimmune diseases http://www.ijbs.org/user/ContentFullText.aspx?VolumeNO=2&StartPage=305&Type=pdf.
Another article I found interesting http://scienceblog.com/community/older/1999/E/199904705.html states that testosterone (and all androgens I would assume) redistribute the immune system to protect the skin. So does this mean that androgens are inflammatory in the skin/hair follicles while estrogens are anti-inflammatory?
