Are there any downsides to using distilled water for a DIY topical?
Hi all, just wondering if there would be any downsides to using distilled water as base for a DIY topical I want to make?
Would I have to worry about it leaching minerals from the scalp and follicles?
Thanks!

Short answer: No.
To me this is one of the more frustrating misnomers. This myth seemed to spread probably through Dr. Mercola's website for at least a decade plus.
Distilled water does not leach minerals. It's a half-truth. It removes inorganic minerals, and improves the retention of organically bound ones.
I drink distilled water and I'm not dead.

Thanks for the answer.
So by increasing the retention of organically bound, ithe distilled water wouldn’t take minerals from outside cells and absorb them into itself? Ie take minerals from hair follicle cells to absorb into itself?
(Pardon my layman understanding, this is what came to mind when reading your answer)

Distilled water will flush out non-biological minerals (no charge, no electrons), which means it will remove various heavy metals we do not want.
Distilled water will help retain biologically active minerals, which we want.
