He CS, my wife is 5 weeks pregnant. She has been prescribed a prenatal multivitamin which contains canola oil, mag & zinc oxide, soy etc. She has been avoiding these ingredients from a long time. Any suggestions on prenatal multivitamin brands?? She is in great shape, healthy and has been successfully following Paleo diet with safe starches ( potatoes, jasmine rice etc ) for a long time.

PS : She has been having probiotics, krill oil, decalcify, R-ALA & Alcar ....would it be fine to continue with these?

I wouldn't take a prescription supplement. They are all garbage. Doctors and pharma are pretty clueless about supplements. My mother, who is a nurse practitioner, was once "prescribed" 50,000iu vitamin D pills. She soon got hypercalcemia, which can be fatal. The whole system is lost.

Off the top of my head the best brands in general are:

Life Extension

New Chapter

Country Life

Jarrow and Nutricology are also pretty good but all their formulations have chitty fillers.

Here is one that is not bad.

To be on the safe side, would recommend she avoid the R-ALA and ALCAR during pregnancy. It's probably safe, although better to go on the order of caution.

Thanks Beebrox for including the link Smile

Hey CS, Most of the Calcium-Magnesium caps have a combination of magnesium oxide, citrate and aspartate with the first ingredient being oxide. Wouldn't it be better to combine calcium and magnesium separately in 2:1 ratio?

Make sure the mother is getting her fair share of iodine as well. There is evidence that iodine allows for more intelligent and better looking babies/people.

Overall in the big picture, everyone has different needs so from that view, it becomes more of a trial and error.

For example most diets are well nourished in calcium already, and in most cases, calcium is not as well utilized by a supplement (there are exceptions). So the other minerals like magnesium are more critical.

Some will benefit from the ultra cheap oxide form of magnesium, probably due to its cleansing effect.

My personal favorite is magnesium malate for general purpose. For cleaning arteries and heart, the orotate form is good. For low tolerance of GI, there's magnesium glycinate. Some people with glutamate receptor sensitivity will have a problem with the aspartate form.

So I think for most of us, just magnesium would be helpful, because calcium is assured by its abundance, plus parathyroid gland controls its absorption (along with vitamin D). Magnesium itself will boost calcium absorption by 16 times vs calcium alone.
