OT: Pregnant wife, which supps? Empty OT: Pregnant wife, which supps?

Post  angstman Tue Mar 26, 2013 11:08 am

Just found out the wifey is pregnant. I have her on the krill oil from this site, folic acid, prenatal, magnesium, and d3. Any of you out there have or had a pregnant lady? What other supps should I look in to?

I got this info from CS, if anyone wants to add to it, that would be great

The Plan

1: Optimize your Vitamin D Levels. Unless you live near the equator, or spend adequate time in the sun in an area that produces sufficient UVB radiation, this is an important step to insure the future health of your baby. The sooner this can be accomplished prior to conception, the better.

Vitamin D levels will impact brain development and allow an improved detoxification and many other critical processes. See our article on "How Much Vitamin D Should You Take?"

2: Say "No" to neural tube defects! Make certain you have healthy folate levels. Note: Folate is not the same as folic acid. Folic acid is produced in a laboratory and does not work in everyone. It is estimated that 5% of the population, or possibly more have an inability to metabolic folic acid. If you're wondering how most supplements contain folic acid and not folate, it is probably due to shelf life. While folate does not have the best shelf life, there is a more stable form that will be effective for those with folate metabolism issues.

Important: To insure that you do not have a folate metabolism issue or presently have low folate levels, do not miss out on this crucial test. This essential test to provide peace of mind against birth defects is known as “neutrophilic hypersegmentation index.”

Understand that proper folate levels are essential to how DNA is arranged during critical stages of development, namely cell division gone wrong. Also, due to various environmental conditions that exist today, a problem of folate metabolism can occur to a much greater extent than just a paltry 5%.

When in doubt about folate issues or if you suspect a problem, the type of folate to take is called 5-Methyl-tetrahydrofolate

Special note about folate supplementation. Insure that you have inadequate intake of vitamin B12 and the mineral zinc, which are important in cellular division. Ultimately one can switch to this prenatal when they are ready to conceive, which contains an effective form of folate along with, B12, zinc and other essential nutrients. These other essential nutrients are vital for other reasons, such as vitamin A for brain, eye and gut development, selenium for the production of crucial enzymes, etc.

3: Remove heavy metals. According to Dr. Hal Huggins, who has spent the past 50 years experience in mercury toxicology and physiology, the fetus absorbs up to two-thirds of its mother's heavy metal burden. Most of these heavy metals come from the fillings in the mouth of the mother. Heavy metals primarily affect the thyroid, which can cause various developmental effects.

Important note: Seeking just any dentist to remove toxic fillings can make a heavy metal toxicity much worse than before. For this reason, it is critical that one employs a dentist who uses a method that prevents re-intoxication by using a rubber dam and other methods of safe extraction. Read the following link for more information.

Also, see our heavy metal detox plan

4: Take 12.5 milligrams of Iodine per day, unless a higher amount is recommended. To sure there is no confusion, that is
100 times the RDA, which is typically 125 micrograms (mcg). Generally, the recommended daily allowance for iodine for pregnant women is 150 mcg. It may be prudent to take 15 milligrams, which is 100 times the RDA, however the use of 12.5 milligrams (mg) has been shown to be very effective in optimizing IQ. The potential boost in IQ could range from 10 to 30 points, and the other list of benefits go far beyond this.

The primary benefit of taking sufficient intake of iodine is not for IQ, it is to insure the baby does not suffer from a higher risk of ADD (attention deficit disorder), mental retardation, autism, or other anomalies. Most of theses conditions stem from insufficient thyroid hormone. The vast majority of women do not have optimal levels of iodine and world wide it is estimated that over 96 percent of people are deficient in this mineral.

5: Ingest plenty of quality protein. What is quality protein? Quality protein is from animal sources, not soy, nor vegetable or grain sources, preferably grass-fed or free-range sources. Non-animal protein is of a different structure than animal protein and therefore is more effective for development. If one is vegetarian, opt for eggs or cheese. Dangerous conditions such as preeclapsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) or eclampsia (seizures and/or convulsions) can be precipitated by a diet lacking in quality protein.

6: Consume quality fat, avoid processed oils (refined) oils and hydrogenated oils. Essential fatty acids can either be harmful or healthful, depending on their quality or state. Almost all vegetable, nut and seed oils are detrimental if they are consumed from standard grocery shelves. Even if these oils are organic, unprocessed they can be detrimental once they are heated or cooked. The reason is simple, these oils are predominately subject to oxidation (free radical attack) from light, head or oxygen and have a very limited shelf life. Moreover, if the oils are the standard variety, they have already undergone a processed which has destroyed the structure of the oil and is already harmful.

Fats and oils that are safe to consume are animal fats, coconut, palm oil and organ, unrefined, raw (uncooked) nut or seed oils. Olive oil is neutral. These quality saturated and polyunsaturated fats are essential to proper nerves and brain development.

7: After the first trimester, the needs of new and developing fetus requires additional calcium and magnesium than most prenatals offer (including the link shown above). Consider supplementing with higher levels of these two minerals in a ratio of 2:1 at this stage. Do not forget magnesium as it is more difficult to obtain even with a perfect diet and consider that it is helpful in preventing preeclampsia.

Adhering to all of these steps will vastly improve one's chances of avoiding not just birth defects, but also conditions such as gestational diabetes, C-sections

That looks like a good plan. I'd try to minimize the actual number of supplements you are having her take during pregnancy. Obviously vitamins and minerals (balanced) are fine, but don't go overboard. I think the plan CS put together there looks good. Just focus on cleaning up her diet to the best extent possible. At that stage of development, fats are key. Make sure you are getting a good balance of fats from good sources (not vegetable oils), sufficient protein, and don't go overboard on refined sugars. For fats, think coconut oil, organic/grass fed milk, avocado, cod liver oil, uncooked olive oil.

Yes, I strongly believe this is the case. The mothers miraculous interconnectedness with the unborn baby goes two ways and could mean trouble if mother is heavily chemical-loaded. Question is, is it wise to start releasing this in this stage or should the mother wait until birth to cleanse, meanwhile hoping her body encapsulates most of the junk? Tricky one.

I would look into (as in research further) FIR sauna and ridiculously high doses of colostrum daily on empty stomach.
