Re: topical melatonin idea
Melatonin can increase or decrease other hormones in the body, according to research performed at Colorado State University, including luteinizing hormone, progesterone, estradiol, thyroid hormone (T4 and T3), growth hormone, prolactin, cortisol, oxytocin and vasopressin. These hormone changes can result in an increased breast size in men (known as gynecomastia), decreased sperm count or a decrease in sperm motility.
Good idea indeed!

SMH @ trolling with quotes from Livestrong.
There's been one reported case of someone with ALS who took a melatonin supplement and the gyno went away after discontinuing usage.

Here's a thought...instead of your smart ass comments accompanying your Livestong quotes, why don't you spend a few minutes and post links to the actual studies/abstracts if you really are so concerned.

Caution with melatonin use?
Maybe there should be more general caution about melatonin. It has been found to constrict blood vessels, impair the metabolism, raise inflammation in some ailments, enhance certain stress hormones, etc. (review Tryptophan Side Effects: L-Tryptophan Is Far From Harmless ).

L-TRYPTOPHAN
L-tryptophan is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth. It has been linked to over 1500 reports of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) and 37 deaths. EMS is a neurological condition with symptoms that include fatigue; intense muscle pain; nerve pain; skin changes; baldness; rash; and pain and swelling affecting the joints, connective tissue, lungs, heart, and liver. Symptoms tend to improve over time, but some people may still experience symptoms up to 2 years after they develop EMS. Some people report that their symptoms have never gone away completely.
In 1990, L-tryptophan was recalled from the market due to these safety concerns. After the limitation of L-tryptophan products, the number of EMS cases dropped sharply. The exact cause of EMS in patients taking L-tryptophan is unknown, but some evidence suggests it may be due to contaminated L-tryptophan products. About 95% of all EMS cases were traced to L-tryptophan.
L-tryptophan can cause some side effects such as heartburn, stomach pain, belching and gas, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. It can also cause headache, lightheadedness, drowsiness, dry mouth, visual blurring, muscle weakness, and sexual problems.

Re: topical melatonin idea
The story with Tryptophan is different than many are probably aware.
For example, L-Trytophan was contaminated at a certain Chinese producer using poor quality control methods. This was the only reason, and that isolated problem has long been removed.

As for melatonin, it's very useful, I take it every night.
