Vit C for the common cold

Pretty impressed by Vit C for the common cold. Tuesday morning I felt a cold coming, I immediately took 3 g of C. The symptoms worsened after 2-3 hours, then I repeteadly took 3-4 grams of C everytime the symptoms seemed to agravate. I think I took about 20 g (in total) in two days. Wednesday night I was symptom free, maybe only a slight headache.
Is there a certain protocol that would actually make Vit C work even better for colds?
