Hello CausticSymmetry, I like to hear if you have advice on preventing ams (acute mountain sickness). I am going up
to Everest basecamp and Kala pattar at appr. 5600 m altitude, and will spend one night at 5100 m. Thanks

I'm afraid that I don't have anything too easy. The only thing I know is to make the ascent in steps, stopping at least once at the half-way mark for at least a day before continuing.

You can try coramina glucose tablets. Friends have used with good results, but they didn't do anything for me. I live near the Andes and typically go to 5,000 meters and have had better luck with coca tea and chewing coca leaves in extreme cases. In fact, any headache, stomach ache or nausea, even at sea level, is immediately cured by coca tea. Good thing I don't have to take any drug tests.

Caustic, yeah that is called to acclimatise. There is a recommendation of supplementing iron.

Calvicie, I will keep coramina in mind. thanks

cpio - It didn't occur to me at first, but I just realized there is something you can take.

Cordyceps. Would take this every day as long as you can before the trip.

I just came back from altitude and was given something that really helped. My main problem at higher altitudes, even as low as 3000 masl, has been slow digestion. Any meal, even a light salad, feels like a ball of lead in my stomach. The poor digestion leads to other symptoms, like sluggishness and stomach ache to headache. Anyway, a friend gave me a Peruvian drug call Frutenzima. I was amazed at the speed and effectiveness.

Capsule contents are (translated from Spanish so may be not quite correct): metoclopramide hydrochloride 7mg; dimethicone 30mg; dehydrocholic acid 25mg; and digestive enzymes, including: 4-NF pancreatin protease 40mg, cellulase 30U, pepsin 100U, lipase 100U, and amylase 5,600U.

I don't think there is a US equivalent, but perhaps digestive enzymes for those with pancreatitis would be just as effective.
