Dietary sources of iodine
Instead of supplementing with iodine, would it be alright to just have daily a cup of yogurt or a serving of kelp? I am trying to avoid supplements as much as I can, since I believe that eating real foods is much less likely to result in health issues.

Re: Dietary sources of iodine
If you're trying to get really high doses (as recommended by Flechas, Abraham, etc.), you'll have a hard time getting enough iodine in through whole foods.
Also, they say that you need both iodiNe and iodiDe, but you're only going to find the salt (iodide) in kelp. In fact, iodine isn't a naturally occurring substance.
IMO the need for iodine and for high doses hasn't been well established, and there's a lot of disagreement in alternative health circles.
But if you're looking for high doses, you're probably going to have to supplement.

Seafood has iodine. I don't know if it's possible to safely get a high level of iodine from diet alone, but getting much of it from diet and taking a mild OTC dose might be better than a high-dose supplement.

I agree with the sentiment here. If you want to pull yourself out of iodine deficiency in any real timely manner, you're probably going to need to supplement. Maybe once you're good and sufficient you'll be able to maintain with whole food sources, but that's a bridge you'll have to cross when you get there.

And how will you know when you are there?
