I do... when I take prebiotics I take them at the same time I take probiotics (capsules or yogurt).

I think is somewhat more effective this way, but it's not necessary.

A little bit of evidence on the benefits of pectin:

http://www.nleducation.co.uk/news/apples-and-nuts-reduce-inflammation-via-mucosal-immune-system/

The idea that adding a positive anti inflammatory food group, say a daily intake of 2-3 apples (3-5gms ea) mimicking the citrus pectin used in the study and other good food derived sources of soluble fibre to achieve the recommended daily intake of 28-35 grams per day to generate an effect on immunity and inflammation control is an exciting discovery. This may well represent one of the viable components of why certain types of diet – the Mediterranean – for example includes a relatively high intake of fat, much of which is of the beneficial kind, as well as soluble fibre rich foods and is causally linked with a reduction in mortality and morbidity.

LF what are your thoughts on apple cider vinegar as a prebiotic? Also I read that an interesting article (http://informedbeauty.com/gut.shtml) stating that pharmaceutical drugs are damaging to intestinal flora and promote candida and what not. Any truth to this?

Yes, pharama drugs can be damaging to your flora and create imbalances with HUGE consequences, specially antibiotics. This is probably the #1 cause for dysbiosis and related problems.

In terms of ACV being a PREbiotic, I've never heard of it. It might be that it contains pectin and many other substances that can feed other bacteria. I rather use other PREbiotics.

The real usefulness of AVC is that it can be used to dissolve intestinal biofilms and probably also help inhibit bad bacteria (I prefer to use other natural antimicrobials like berberine, GSE and oregano).

What about propecia? I looked at the inactive ingredients and they seemed pretty harmless.

Probably propecia is mostly harmless for the intestinal flora (because it's not an antibiotic). Can't say the same thing about other organs...

Propecia contains bromine. Don't know how that will effect intestinal bacteria though.

Should mention that many pharma drugs now contain flouride which will effect intestinal bacteria. http://www.slweb.org/ftrcfluorinatedpharm.html

Thanks for the info guys. However I still have more questions lol. Does high iodine intake kill off beneficial flora as well as the bad? I read in a study that sea weed helps facilitate equol production so mabye it iodine doesn't kill off the good flora.?

baller234,

No Iodine will not kill off intestinal bacteria to any noticeable degree... even when consuming very large amounts. Info about Iodine killing candida, etc. unless used topically is blown way out of proportion IMO/IME.

In general, the only real issue would be lack of selenium when supplementing Iodine or if supplementing very large amounts of "Iodine" when heavy metal toxic as the "Iodine" will oxidize the heavy metals. This is probably why on curezone large doses of "Iodide" is used and small doses such as Detoxified Iodine or Nascent Iodine is used. Supplementing this way, it is superior to taking something like Lugol's in many people's experience as well as mine. The reason being Lugol's contains too much Iodine and not enough Iodide.

JDP-

Have you heard anything about garlic or oregano in regards to killing beneficial gut bacteria. I have heard yes and no. I don't know if there is still no consensus or if there are definite answers on this yet.

DM5, I really don't know.

One thing that does appear to be accurate is the garlic that's in the supermarket is probably not as beneficial as claimed. The Bob Beck part has been brought up before but who knows, it may have merit. Something to see if you get slower reaction times. Tellurium is what scares me the most regarding regular garlic.

JDP-

Wow, I am taken aback. Tellurium in garlic. Been using daily for the last year or so. It's definitely an effective antibacterial but will have to reevaluate its use now that there is question over its toxicity.
