Probiotics and Iodine
Does Iodine kill the healthy bacteria in your gut as well as the unhealthy yeast? Should we take our probiotics at a different time then our iodine?

This is what I heard too, I'm sure I read somewhere that Iodine kills good bacteria as well as bad.

Re: Probiotics and Iodine
I'll give this a bump. I wouldn't imagine that iodine differentiates between bacteria. It's not like it has intelligence. That said, as a staple part of our diet for millennia, perhaps good bacteria has evolved and developed alongside iodine so that it's not affected. In any case, a great question since I spend a lot on probiotics, iodine, and other supplements and would hate to think I'm just canceling them out...

Re: Probiotics and Iodine
The answer is no. This was previously believed, but iodine researchers now find there is not a problem with iodine and healthy microflora.

CS, Thanks, this is news to me.
This is actually good news. I also thought iodine killed healthy microflora.
when you say "there is not a problem with iodine and healthy microflora", are you saying that iodine does not kill healthy microflora, or that the benefits of iodine outweigh the killing of this microflora that can be easily added via probiotics?
I went online and on pubmed and I couldn't find any information supporting the view that iodine does not kill off the healthy microflora, could you please direct me to a website or study that concluded that idodine did not kill healthy microflora, please?
Thank you

bump I'm interested in this too. My guess is that iodine does kill off some good bacteria but it's not enough to be problamatic.

Don't mean to answer for CS but CS is correct that there really isn't any noticeable change in killing off the beneficial bacteria IMO/IME. I've taken as high as 1000 mg of Iodide in one sitting without any noticeable change in beneficial bacteria. You might notice a small change but no enough to mention.
I've also mentioned before that the antibacterial, antimicrobial, etc. of Iodine/Iodide are a bit overblown when taken internally. Yeah, it will work for candida a little but needs to be combined with others for better results... in this case boron. And to avoid confusion, boron and Iodine still won't kill of beneficial bacteria to any noticeable degree.

Re: Probiotics and Iodine
Do not worry about Iodine at all.
Iodine will help to correct dysbiosis. It will do wonders for SIBO, Candida, parasites, etc. I'm currently doing 12.5 of 5% lugol's with no problems.
Just keep taking probiotics away from Iodine for maximum effect! and that's all!
BTW It's not necessary to take probiotics while on Iodine, it is necessary to take them if you have dysbiosis and/or you want a therapeutic effect and better health.
I second JDP.
