NAC: An invaluable supplement for mental health and addiction recovery. True?

I was wondering what is the consensus on N-Acetylcysteine's ability to combat mental illness and addictive behaviour? It is even touted as helping gambling addicts. Could this be true? I understand drug addiction can benefit from this but, why would it help a gambling addict?
