I'm not entirely convinced vitamin D prevents as many conditions as has been suggested lately. I did some brief research after viewing the video, and Washington State, which has far less sunny days than Florida has 6.9% prevalence of asthma in children versus Florida's 8.3%. The U.S average is 9%. All this is taken from CDC. I hope this doesn't come across wrong, it has just always bugged me how those in colder climates have to resort to say, vit D supps/sprays or sunless tanning beds to optimize these levels when these things were certainly not available in the distant past. If Vitamin D does in fact make a large difference on all these different conditions than we should be seeing a deteoriation of health in general, in the colder areas, and see the health soar of those in the sunnier places.

This post is mostly to open up conversation, I thought the video was well done.

SonofOdin - Thanks for your comments. To help put this into perspective, there is a certain paradox with those who live in warmer climates. They do not always get adequate sun exposure for a few reasons.

(1) The age of Internet and game consoles reduces exposure. When I was a kid, there was "nothing to do" except to play outside.

(2) During the winter time in the Northern Hemisphere, even sunshine states do not yield UVB radiation to make vitamin D.

(3) Most people take showers/baths after exposure, thus literally washing off what would later convert into vitamin D.

(4) We no longer go outside "half-naked"

(5) Nutrients are required to help conversion of vitamin D that most people lack.

So for all of these reasons, it's not easy to get enough vitamin D even in warmer climates.

Those are all very good points, thank you. So in the past, point #2 was not an issue because humans had acquired enough vitamin D prior to winter time, because 1,3,4 and 5 were less of, or a non issue entirely back then if I am understanding correctly.
