Great article on how thyrotropin releasing hormone increases mitochondria in scalp follicles and causes growth
This study has to be the best I've read in a long time. It's long but well worth the read.
In a nutshell, it states that thyrotropin releasing hormone causes an increase in mitochondria in skin cells and scalp follicles. Increased mitochondria = higher oxygen consumption = higher energy.
And it also states that TRH stimulates hair follicle growth:
"Most recently, we have found that TRH functions as a surprisingly potent stimulator of human HF growth in situ (20). These hair growth-promoting effects of TRH in the absence of systemic endocrine influences must have been independent of any stimulation of thyroid or pituitary hormone release by TRH. Moreover, previous microarray analysis of TRH-treated human HF suggested that TRH may up-regulate the transcription of the mitochondria-selective subunit I of respiratory chain complex IV (MTCO1) (14), the rate-limiting step of the respiratory chain.
We hypothesized that TRH may alter mitochondrial activity and metabolic capacity in human skin epithelium and asked whether TRH modulates mitochondrial energy metabolism in normal, intact human epidermis in serum-free skin organ culture"
