strange and extremely thick and coarse hair strands in beard

every now and again i get some strange and extremely thick and coarse hair strands in beard...
a slight pull on them and they seem to come off... also, by looking at them it doesn't really seem like they have a root... their "inside" end seems very blunt and just as thick as the rest of their body. oh and they sometimes are a bit wiry...
if only i knew what made them turn so thick i guess my temples could use some of the same help...
excepted i don't like how easily they come out...
anyone has seen anything similar on themselves?
