Potassium-iodide - Nuclear fallout from Japan?
So I got an e-mail from a client today talking about possible fallout from Japan travelling over here on the Jet stream in the next 36 hours (west coast). They are claiming that Potassium-iodide supplemenation could help prevent it damage.
Any thoughts on fallout reaching here and if so is this supplementation something to look into?

Re: Potassium-iodide - Nuclear fallout from Japan?
unfortunate - Yes, the best thing to do is to take plenty of potassium iodide (or Lugol's)
If you have any Lugol's solution on hand that would be good to take in large amounts.
Or if you happen to have SSKI (super saturated potassium iodine), that would be good too.
Since the Tsunami happened, I have been loading up on extra iodine in case the jet stream steers the radiation this way.
There's also Beta-1,3 1/6 Glucan.
Beyond that, essential fatty acids, water and fat soluble antioxidants.

Yep, the iodine displaces radioactive iodine from the body, saving the thyroid.

Is it safe to give iodine to pets dogs or cats, for instance?

What would the best thing to do for young children in a case like this? Talking about under 2 years old. Not sure if giving high doses of iodine to a child that young wouldn't be a terrible idea.

When to take? Before exposure? After? During?CausticSymmetry wrote:

Are there any side effects known?

And what about Pifitrin-Alpha compound? Is it on the market? Is it safe?

Lots of important questions in here. From a current events perspective, this is an important thread.
I know people are edgy right now but hopefully we can get a discussion going.

After seeing the aftermath of Chernobyl first hand I completely agree, this needs and deserves to be talked about with great attention.

Radiation will go directly into the thyroid, and it affected the population around the region for several years (lots of thyroid problems).
In the young, would introduce at least some iodine. It's not toxic, it's an essential mineral. Only when we have exposed to poisons long enough that build up into tissue, does iodine even cause a potential detox reaction.

LA-Night - Yes, it's an essential mineral for mammals.

What about this too, when we must take iodide? Before, after, during? One dose is enough? Or we must do over a period?CausticSymmetry wrote:LA-Night - Yes, it's an essential mineral for mammals.

Directo - It would take a while and a lot of iodine to completely protect the thyroid from radiation.
But some is better than none.

If we don't have iodide, how much sea salt can we take for protect? And do we must take that quantity in one time or over a period?

Re: Potassium-iodide - Nuclear fallout from Japan?
Just finished reading the news. Looks like radiation is indeed leaking out of the damaged nuclear plant. Tokyo has already registered abnormal radiation levels.
I wonder if winds will carry the radiation to the U.S. west coast? Is it a matter of if or when?
Aside from upping my iodine dose, I haven't made radical changes to my regimen -- yet.

i see CS and others talk sometimes about iodine in this thread. is that good too, or one needs iodide?

Fox news is starting to actually feel like a satirical rouse upon itself ... like the Colbert Report that doesn't know it's the Colbert Report ... Looks like we all had better go to Japan for a health sabbatical.

so, it looks like the plume has reached california today. it also looks like it's not so bad for now.
suppose i manage to get some potassium iodide by tuesday or wednesday... i read somewhere you are supposed to apply it to the skin in liquid or rather than swallowing the pills. is that true?
thanks!

Unless you're in Japan and near the plants themselves, I really wouldn't worry.

Re: Potassium-iodide - Nuclear fallout from Japan?
I would be more concerned about the daily additive effect of combined radiation exposure, of which Fukushima fallout is just more of the same. Supplemental iodine especially makes sense in this nuclear age. I personally like Lugol's and nascent iodine over any other forms.

Re: Potassium-iodide - Nuclear fallout from Japan?
Besides iodine, one of the most effective way to protect against radiation is using clay. It can be used internally; it absorbs toxins attached the the thyroid and will allow iodine to work better (less competitive inhibition). Also, a bath with clay will help pull out toxins.
