Figuring out salt and the blood pressure connection
CS,
Q1.
How can one know they are getting the right amounts of: Calcium, Carbohydrates, Copper, Magnesium, Phosphate, Potassium, Vitamin D along with salt?
As far as I understand, these keep hypertension under check even when consuming salt, that hypertension may not just be caused by salt but by by the lack of and/or the interactions of all these other minerals as well.
Q2.
What kind of salt do you eat?
I know pure sea salt has Magnesium, which helps with preventing high blood pressure that one could get if consuming table salt alone.
Q3.
I found a TON of studies on Pubmed about how people need to consume "less salt", and only one study (the one you linked to here http://www.immortalhair.org/physiology.htm) on how "less salt" has negative effects. But, based on searching PubMed it seems the idea of less salt is still prevalent and no one is concerned about "less salt".
So, is "less salt" really a bad thing? Are there other studies besides the one you referenced that show that salt is needed and the lack of it can cause cardiovascular disease?
Thank you!!

ezmbh - Studies on salt only look at sodium chloride, and do not take into account that insulin resistance and metabolic activity impact on salt.
Other minerals like potassium and magnesium balance out sodium. Blood pressure is not too significant in salt-induced hypertensive individuals (it's more to do with other factors).
Unrefined sea salt (the right kind, probably dried by the sun is okay). Check out this info: Note the results of Finnish people and the type of salt they consume.

mammals need salt, everyone has seen horses, they like to lick on salt blocks. I can't imagine that it is a healthy thing to not eat salt.. but I bought into the mainstream idea and for the last 5 yrs I limited my salt intake drastically, I think resulting in fatigue at times.. and salt cravings.
I am not talking about MSG's, i'm talking about table salt.
CS, thanks for the link

Re: Figuring out salt and the blood pressure connection
Many people blame salt on this or that, but in reality it is probably the lack of fiber and phytonutrients and an excess of protein, fat, and cholesterol which cause high-blood-pressure.
If the arteries begin to clog up with cholesterol, your heart has to increase the pressure to make sure the blood gets to where it needs to go.
