Cooking with kombu
It is great cooing with a piece of kombu in a dish since it increases the taste
quite alot .. but isnt this taste increase from MSG? If MSG is bad, and kombu is full of it,
isnt that a problem? ..

Re: Cooking with kombu
I've wondered about this too.
It seems like a lot of progress has been made in terms of actually getting a handle on what causes mpb, but the factors are becoming almost too widespread:
MSG / High Oxolate Foods
Bromide
Heavy metals
Sugar
anything non organic
hot water
Some of these things must have a far greater effect than others - maybe that differs for different people - but if all the factors we discuss here were all major catalysts then I doubt any of us who suffer would last more than a few years before total baldness.

Re: Cooking with kombu
When MSG is found naturally in foods such tomatoes, mushrooms, seaweed, blood from a steak, etc. you're fine .... unless talking about fermented food or when cooked for an extremely long time in a slow cooker such as bone broth, etc. then that can be a problem .... but varies with each batch.
So again, the problem with MSG is not the miniscule amounts found in nature but how much is purposely added to processed food to make it taste better such as almost all chocolate, almost all canned soups, potato chips, flour (i.e. barley flour), baby food, dairy products ---> 95% of processed foods.
Organic produce is not completely immune either as they are sprayed with MSG (i.e. auxigrow) in the fields ---> the reason why bees are leaving.

gbp2000,
A lot of the things discussed on this site are not direct causes of MPB but if you suffer from MPB then they will exacerbate your hair loss.
Take for example, MSG. MSG by itself I highly doubt is a direct cause of hair loss. However, you could be one of 40% or so people sensitive to MSG. If you are, it will only make a hypothyroid condition worse .... among other problems.

Re: Cooking with kombu
Thanks for the clarification JDP.
Whilst I think a lot of the things I have read and implemented, from both yourself and CS have helped my hairloss, I even have some regrowth on my temples, I am still thinning at the front, and at am a loss to understand why.
