Bronchitis
I've been battling a few chest colds over the past winter (in Australia) but havent been seeking treatment from the doctor because I don't particularly like using antibiotics. However, I've fallen pretty ill lately and contracted Bronchitis as bad as I've ever had it (severe aches and pains, fever and chills).
The doctor has given me roxymicin and suggested I take Bisolvin as well. On doing some research I have found roxymicin can't be purchased in America, and its also undergoing clinical trials for MPB (interesting eh?).
I'm guessing this may play a bit of havoc with my system so I was wondering if there are any natural remedies to relieve and prevent chest cols/infections? - I take probiotics and try to eat an orange a day during winter.

Re: Bronchitis
Socceroo - One of the very few reasons to go ahead with antibiotic therapy is for upper respiratory infections.
So the best thing to do here is taking a probiotic along with it like you suggested and you could taking some SSKI (Super Saturated Potassium Iodine) drops, (a few in water daily) to reduce the mucus.

CS,
I read that most of the time bronchitis is caused by a virus so antibiotics are useless? I have it now pretty bad for about 4 days and it isn't letting up.

Re: Bronchitis
Paradox - If it's "viral," then it's probably an allergy, such as pasteurized milk or the body is going through a cleanse to clear out the respiratory tract--an intentional inflammation for repair. However, it's quite likely to be an infection.
If it is bacterial, there is an alternative to antibiotics. Try a course of Berberine 500 mg to 1000 mg per day.

Re: Bronchitis
I had a pretty bad upper resp. infection in Nepal and couldnt get rid of it entirely for 2 months, with coughing especially at night. It wasnt until I found a Tibetan doctor - gave me herbal medicine for 5 days morning and evening, the infection cleared up and coughing went away! If you can find a tibetan colony where you live chances are good there will be a doctor there, it is a great alternative to the normal doctor.

Thanks CS. Well my roommate had it first, and then I got it, and now the other roommate has it; so does that give you a better idea? The first roommate went through a course or two of antibiotics and is clearing up now.
I don't have medical insurance, so you think I should go with the berberine or try to get some AB's from one of those low income clinics?

Re: Bronchitis
Yes, either or will work. If you go to one of those walk-in clinics, they will listen to your chest and will tell you right away if it's viral or bacterial. However, it might be cheaper to buy Berberine unless the appointment is free.

Thanks... I will try the berberine. I just want to be sure that whatever I take works. I would opt for the Dr. if you had any doubts on the berberine.

This is true however often viral upper respiratory infections cause secondary bacterial infections.

That's good to know, thanks.

Re: Bronchitis
CS,
I did a quick search on berberine and it seems that it works for respiratory conditions by relaxing the tracheal muscles (lessening cough) and by its actions on mucus, but not as an antibiotic:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18237471

I've been taking this Nature's Way Umcka for a couple days now. Are you familiar with it?

Re: Bronchitis
This looks (Umcka) like a better and cheaper route to take. Although bear in mind that Berberine does work for
both viral and bacterial infections: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21660679
