Homemade topicals Empty Homemade topicals

Post  j87x Tue Nov 10, 2009 8:29 pm

I just wanted to post the topical I've been using for about a year now, I'm convinced that it has helped slow down my hairloss a lot. Before I started using it I would shed 10 - 15 hairs every time I washed my head. About a week after applying every night, I noticed only 2 - 4 hairs coming out. I basically just bought a bunch of stuff and mixed it together, got good results and have been using the same formula since. Feel free to analyze it and speculate which ingredients are most effective, or suggest other ingredients to add.

In a 60ml bottle I add:
Resveratrol - 1 gram
Curcumin (white non staining) - 1 gram
COQ10 - 200mg
Ginko bilboa extract - 200mg
1ml of the following:
dragon's blood
clove extract
cayenne
ginger root extract
melatonin
The rest of the bottle I fill with aloe vera gel/juice.
For preservatives I add a couple drops of grapfruitseed extract, small amount of ethly alcohol, few drops of polysorbate 80, few drops of emu/jojoba oil, kept refrigerated.

Before I started using that, I used the essential oil blend, it cut down on shedding quite a bit too, but not as much. Now I use both together at night, I haven't seen any hairs fall out in a long time.
THYME ESSENTIAL OIL- 2 DROPS
CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL- 2 DROPS
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL - 3 DROPS
ROSEMARY OIL - 3 DROPS
JOJOBA OIL - 1/2 TEASPOON (2.5 ml)
GRAPESEED OIL 4 TEASPOONS (20 ml)

I modified it so that coconut and emu oil are in it instead of so much grapeseed/jojoba oil.

Whenever I have gone several weeks without using these, I will start to shed hair again. I feel that these topicals have helped more than anything else I've tried including rogaine, nanominox fms, virile mane, shampoos, and whatever else.

Anyone else have success with homemade topicals please share.

Great topical, thanks for posting!

I no very little about how to formulate things like this, but I guess it's important to have:

1. base
2. preservatives
3. active agents
4. penetration agents

I think all your ingredients sounds good and who knows how they all work, but cayenne and lavender are very interesting from what I've heard/read.

I made a bunch of purchases on makingcosmetics.com

here's what i got

polysorbate-80
zinc oxide (micronized) powder
zinc oxide powder
colloidal oatmeal powder
AS corn starch
l-ascorbic acid powder
magnesium ascorbyl phosphate powder
niacinamide powder
citric acid crystals
liquid licorice extract

Now, all these have different pH and combining them will result in some other pH. Where can i learn how to mix these ingredients properly, find out which ones don't mix well together, figure out what pH i should try to aim for, etc. etc. etc?

j87x, thanks for sharing this!

I was told that Rosemary raises blood pressure.

Are the rest of these essential oils beneficial without side-effects?

In particular I heard good things about rosewood and/or cedar wood oils.

Have you considered adding a raw egg to the mix, or kefir, or olive oil?
