Is minoxidil actually harmful?
Is it ever worth using it to rejuvenate hair follicles that are on their total last legs, while you work out better solutions to support them? Or does it in some way damage the follicles?
I am never sure whether to recommend it to people who have lost more hair, simply to kick some life into the close to dead follicles!
What do you think? Any better/safer/healthier alternative?
Hoppi!

Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
Hoppipolla - Minoxidil covers up a symptom of mineralocorticoid/electrolyte imbalance. If you raise insulin levels by eating high glycemic foods, it will depress phosphate levels and cause imbalances, raising aldosterone, which will cause hair loss.
Minerals like magnesium can reduce aldosterone, getting sufficient vitamin D can reduce aldosterone, normalizing glucose levels can reduce aldosterone, eating right for your ancestral type will keep phosphate levels above 4 and prevent chaos with calcium, and adverse endocrine gland changes.
Balance, calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium and phosphorus levels will do more good than any amount of minoxidil will ever do. Plus, hair doesn't necessarily grow excessively in places like the back, such as with minoxidil.

Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
Ah ok, because the thing is although I wasn't asking that about just me, I am a bit concerned about my hairline especially until other things start to kick in and I get my whole regimen together.
I have some aloe vera gel, and some of the hairline I believe is coming back, but I'd really like to save all of it if possible
Is there anything really good I can put on those follicles (I'm already using Nizoral 2% to strip the 5ar from them and bind their receptors) to nourish them and encourage them to grow? I really want to act nice and fast before they die
I was thinking even of topical onion/sulphur soap, and was trying the aloe vera gel a bit. Ideally yeah I want something which isn't TOO expensive, and will not only stimulate but also nourish them so they can get more encouragement to grow!
Thank you I really appreciate all this, I can't wait until my hairline is back - I'll try my hardest! ^_^

Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
Am I right in saying the crucial things to help follicles to grow once the 5ar/DHT has been removed (and inflammation removed etc) are stimulants, nutrients, and a good "vehicle" for getting them into the scalp and to the follicle? Unfortunately I don't know the best options for any of those 3 yet! hehe
Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
Sorry, to continue the minoxidil discussion, it open potassium channels in the cells and vasodilates right? So... my reason for not believing in it was it doesn't seem to tackle the real issues (DHT, inflammation etc) and merely forces the follicle back into life. So the DHT is still there and... is the follicle still damaged by everything? Is that why the follicles are prone to falling out very fast when you stop applying?
It just didn't seem the prudent choice for my hair's health or my body's, that's why I never got any! heh

Hoppipolla,
You can perform a search on this thread which answers your question. Also, almost all questions related to hair loss can also be found on this thread.

Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
hmm, I kinda wanted to say sorry for.. well for not completely understanding CSs response last time on minoxidil. I still don't fully understand as of course this is very complex, but I feel like I am gradually getting there. I read a post by Dr Proctor on HLT where he said this:
The guy is actually pretty cool like, I always had more respect for DS Labs and Dr Lee before, but I am gradually starting to come around to Dr Proctor's... at least knowledge in topical treatments! I just ordered some Spectral RS and Hair Regain so fingers crossed this should perfect my minoxidil and spiro -free topical regimen, I only wish to add those strong topicals if I really have to, but I do have DNC and Dr Lee's Spiro in like.. they're like my emergency topicals which I will order if my hair is ever in big trouble!
So yes the minoxidil thing, as now I am avoiding Min so I would love to correct things from within.
So, how is it that aldosterone relates to nitric oxide? Does my body have too little nitric oxide because of having too much aldosterone? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick here?
And I am really fascinated in this, I already feel much healthier so I am sure my hormonal balance is much-improved, but this is where I am currently turning my attention, to see if I can boost hair growth through this potential internal change
Actually, I have never thought that minoxidil works because it is a vasodialator. In fact, nobody has thought this for a long time. For one thing, there are many vasodialators that don't grow hair. And NO-containing hair growth stimulators that do not dialate blood vessels.
Rather, minoxidil (or perhaps a metabolite) stimulates hair growth and dialates blood vessels because it is a "nitric oxide agonist". That is , it acts like NO, probably on "K-channels".
Nitric oxide ("NO") does a lot of things. Two of these happen to be 1) directly modulating the hair cycle and 2) dialating blood vessels. So minoxidil does both too. But these actions are independent of one another.

Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
I would not recommend using minoxidil. I used it for about 6 years and i read on some other websites that some of the healthy hairs that would normally not fall out, get minox depended. So when you stop using it you will end up with less hair then if you would never have used it. Dont know if it's true but it scared me and i dont see the use of minoxidil unless you gonna use it till you die.
And there is always some systemetic absorption, who knows what it does to your body in the long run.

Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
Ah yes I find that really interesting, as that was basically one of my #1 concerns about it.
What do you think of aminexil/Spectral RS? http://www.divineskin.com/spectralRS
http://www.baldness-cure.org/spectral-rs-review
That was my theory which is why I grabbed it, I can always resell it on ebay though if it turns out I'm wrong. I thought Spectral RS coupled with that Hair Regain herbal solution should provide a pretty effective natural, safe topical while I get my hair under control! What do you think?

Re: Is minoxidil actually harmful?
"Aminexil SP94 (clinically proven to help re-grow hair; Aminexil is a patented molecule that is the result of over 10 years of research at L’Oreal laboratories. Research has indicated that hair loss is linked to the stiffening of the hair roots and Aminexil has been specifically developed to prevent the stiffening and premature aging of the roots.)"
Sounds totally wicked. But I will do more research - it's always so hard to tell isn't it?
